Hello class and welcome to the class and I will be your instructor for this course. This is a -week course and requires a lot of time commitment, organization, and a high level of dedication. Please use the class syllabus to guide you through all the assignments required for the course. I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. • Include in-text citations in your response
• Do not include quotes—instead summarize and paraphrase the information
• Follow APA-7th edition
• Points will be deducted if the above is not followed

Participation –replies to your classmates or instructor

• A minimum of 6 responses per week, on at least 3 days of the week.
• Each response needs at least ONE reference with citations—best if it is a peer reviewed journal article
• Each response needs to be at least 75 words in length (does not include your list of references)

The fundamental nursing concepts are also called the metaparadigms of nursing. They provide the framework for understanding nursing practice. The metaparadigms shape nursing education, govern how nurses approach their work and form the basis for ethics of practice.

Although the definitions for fundamental nursing concepts differ slightly depending on which theorist you subscribe to, many nursing theorists agree on the following components:

​Person​

The person is the patient, and the central focus of the work. All parts of a person, including their physical, psychological, sociological and spiritual parts, are deserving of attention and well-being.

​Environment​

The environment is the physical space in which a person receives care. It is also the energy of the space, affected by the people in it, including caregivers and family members. Ideally, the environment created for the patient is one of healing, comfort and dignity.

​Health​

Virginia Henderson, often called the Florence Nightingale of the 20th century, helped define the role of nurses by first defining health in terms of what individuals can do for themselves: breathe normally, eat and drink adequately, maintain body temperature, dress and groom the body, move voluntarily, communicate, express emotions, participate in learning and recreational activities and be able to sleep and rest.

When an individual loses the ability to do any of these things independently, the nurse is an integral part of the health care team that works to help the individual regain independent function, whenever possible.

​Nursing​

As explained in Framework for Professional Nursing Practice, the nurse’s role is to help people do the things that define health that they are unable to do for themselves. Nursing, according to Henderson, requires head, heart and hands. Nurses apply their professional knowledge and capacity for empathy to alter a patient’s environment with a goal of healing or, when that is not possible, a comfortable death.

Becoming a Nurse
The fundamental nursing concepts are applied at all levels of the profession. Depending on the level of education you pursue, there are different entry points to the profession and a number of ways to advance. Nursing encompasses a wide variety of professional responsibilities in a number of specialty areas.

​Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)​

Also called a certified nursing assistant (depending where the training program is located), individuals in this role provide the most

basic level of patient care. CNAs, under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), assist patients with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing and eating. They take and record vital signs. They may provide wound care, assistance in turning or transporting a patient and help with some medical procedures. CNAs may be responsible for cleaning rooms, changing linens and stocking supplies.

To become a CNA, you must have a high school diploma. CNA training programs, typically lasting four to 12 months, are available through the American Red Cross, community colleges, medical facilities and vocational/technical schools. After completing an approved training program, you must pass your state’s exam in order to work.

Every state has its own exam, training requirements and scope of responsibilities for CNAs. To find out what’s required where you live, visit the interactive map at Registered Nursing. As of 2021, the average CNA salary was ​$15.35​ per hour, or ​$34,670​ annually. The employment website Indeed lists average earnings by state.

​Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)​

A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides basic nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). In addition to monitoring and recording vital signs, LPNs can administer medications and insert catheters. As explained on the Nurse.org website, LPNs are often the first point of contact for patients’ family members. In that role, they explain care programs and medical procedures. They also communicate family questions and concerns to RNs and other members of the healthcare team.

In California and Texas, the term “licensed vocational nurse,” or LVN, is used in place of LPN. Education, licensing and scope of practice are essentially the same. Becoming an LPN or LVN requires completion of a one-year accredited program, typically offered through a community college. State licensure is also required. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median 2020 earnings for LPNs and LVNs were ​$23.47​ per hour, or ​$48,820​ per year.

​Registered Nurse (RN)​

Registered nurses (RNs) have a wide scope of practice depending on their work setting, education, training, experience and specialty. Most RNs are involved in some way in the assessment of patients and the preparation of care plans. RNs prepare patients for exams or medical procedures, operate and monitor medical equipment and work with patients and their families on the management of medical conditions and, as applicable, post-treatment care.

There are several paths to becoming an RN. One is to earn a diploma or associate degree in nursing (ADN) through an accredited program at a medical center, community college or vocational technical school. The other is to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). Some schools offer an accelerated BSN program for individuals who have already earned an ADN. Whether diploma, associate degree or bachelor’s degree, all RNs must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and be licensed in the state where they practice.

Many employers prefer to hire nurses with a BSN, so the extra time and effort required to earn the four-year degree can pay off in terms of employment opportunities and salary. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 2020 median salary of RNs as ​$36.22​ per hour, or ​$75,330​ per year.

​Nurse Practitioner (NP)​

A nurse practitioner (NP) has advanced clinical training beyond that required for an RN. NPs hold either a master’s a doctorate in nursing. They work both autonomously and in collaboration with other members of the health care team in primary, acute and specialty practices. Because they can order and interpret diagnostic tests, diagnose and treat acute conditions and prescribe medications, they can quickly meet the needs of patients who would otherwise have to wait for an appointment with a physician.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners lists a number of specialties for NPs, including acute care, adult health, family health, gerontology, neonatal health, oncology, pediatrics, psychiatric and women’s health. Subspecialties include allergy and immunology, cardiovascular, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, neurology, occupational health, orthpedics, pulmonology, sports medicine and urology. As of 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the average 2o2o salary for nurse practitioners as ​$55.05​ per hour, or ​$114,510​ per year.
