Episode 1 – The Difference Between Us: The Difference Between Us examines the contemporary science – including genetics – that challenges our common sense assumptions that human beings can be bundled into three or four fundamentally different groups according to their physical traits.
Reflection Prompts:
- What is the difference between a biological and a social view of race?
- Why is it impossible to use biological characteristics to sort people into consistent races?
- What kinds of biological differences were early scientists looking for to suggest that people of different races are fundamentally different?
- Who has benefited from the belief that we can sort people according to race and that there are natural or biologically based differences between racial groups?
- “Just because race isn’t something biological, that doesn’t mean it’s not real.” What are some of the real social consequences of race?
- Anthropologist Alan Goodman says that “to understand why the idea of race is a biological myth requires a major paradigm shift.” Do you agree? Did the film present anything that shifted your thinking in major way? If so, what? Is it difficult to make this shift? Why?
Despite significant advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of most chronic diseases, evidence suggests that racial and ethnic minorities receive lower-quality care than nonminorities, and that patients of minority ethnicity have higher morbidity and mortality from various chronic diseases than nonminorities. “Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare exist and, because they are associated with inferior outcomes in many circumstances, are unacceptable,” according to an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on unequal treatment. 1 “Racial or ethnic inequalities in the quality of health care that are not due to access-related variables or clinical needs, preferences, and appropriateness of intervention,” according to the IOM report. 1 Since the release of the IOM study, there has been a renewed focus on identifying the sources of inequalities, identifying contributing variables, and developing and assessing effective interventions to minimize or eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health care.
Three research published in this edition of the journal provide fresh light on the causes of racial and ethnic disparities in health care and the factors that contribute to them. Trivedi and Ayanian 2 conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 54,968 respondents to the 2001 California Health Interview Survey to investigate the link between perceptions of health care discrimination and utilization of health services in the first study. Approximately 5% of respondents said they have been discriminated against in some way. Those who reported discrimination were less likely to receive some preventive care services; nevertheless, even after accounting for perceived discrimination, racial, gender, and insurance differences in preventive care receipt remained.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!

Huang et al. 3 evaluated the factor structure, endorsement rates, and differential item functioning of the well-validated 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) depression scale across 5,053 white, African American, Chinese American, and Latino primary care patients in their second study. Although there was evidence of differential item functioning for some items, the PHQ-9 factor structure was consistent across ethnic groups. The authors concluded that the PHQ-9 is an excellent screening and monitoring tool for depression in a variety of populations because it evaluates a common concept of depression.
