Civil Service and Interviewing Techniques

Civil Service and Interviewing Techniques

Please respond to the following questions:

“Didn’t Cut It?” is a case study. Hire Another,” analyze the following and justify your response:

1) The types of management errors that occurred

2) Additional options Kathy and Sam could have applied for this position, which could have resulted in a more successful hiring decision.

“Didn’t Cut It?” Case Study Hire someone else.” Meadows Nursing Home hired Kathy Gray for the position of business manager. Hers would be a small department, with only two other employees and one open clerical position. Despite her extensive experience in business office operations, this was Kathy’s first supervisory position. Kathy’s first task was to find someone to fill the open clerical position. She asked the person in charge of human resources to assist her in finding some candidates to interview. There was no HR department, just one person who also coordinated home purchases. Kathy’s manager, nursing home administrator Sam Weston, chose to observe the interviews, citing Kathy’s lack of experience with supervision as the reason. Weston reasoned that because Kathy had never interviewed or hired before, he should assist her in the process. Kathy and her boss interviewed four candidates together. Two of them appeared to be reasonably qualified for the position. One of these was Louise Bennett, a young woman who worked in the home’s food service department. The other was a young woman named Emily Smith, whose only work experience was a few months in a convenience store. Following the interviews, Kathy expressed her desire to hire Louise Bennett from food service because she appeared to have the ability and a strong desire to improve herself. She reasoned that hiring Ms. Bennett would demonstrate the home’s commitment to developing employees from within the organization. Weston, on the other hand, told Kathy that she could hire “the next time a job opened.” Weston made the decision to hire the other candidate and personally informed Emily Smith of the offer. Kathy became increasingly concerned as the 30-day probationary period progressed that Emily was not behaving satisfactorily. Even after giving Ms. Smith a thorough orientation, providing her with reasonable guidance, and giving her the benefit of the doubt because she was “the boss’s choice,” Kathy had to conclude that keeping Emily would be a mistake for the nursing home. Kathy Gray went to see Sam Weston on the 28th day of Emily Smith’s employment. Weston had been kept informed, so it came as no surprise when Kathy suggested they fire Smith and start over. “All right,” Weston said. “Did she not cut it? Let her go and hire someone else.” Kathy paused before declaring, “I don’t believe I should be the one to let her go.” She was not hired by me.” “She’s your employee,” Weston said, “so fire her.” What management blunders were made? Given that Emily Smith reported to Kathy despite the fact that Weston hired her, do you believe Weston avoided responsibility by ordering Kathy to fire Emily? How could this entire situation have been handled more professionally? What impact might the Smith incident have on Kathy Gray and Sam Weston’s future relationship?

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
