Practicum Reflective Journal for Nursing Report Paper

During week 2 I was able to collaborate with my preceptor to identify a specific evidence-based topic for the capstone project change proposal.  I spent a lot of my time researching clinical problems the organization is facing, how much evidenced-based practice the nurses follow and some of the policies and procedures the center follows. I was able to discuss and develop a solution with my preceptor to identify a clinical practice problem and the implications it would have on nursing practice.

During my research on my capstone project, nurse burnout; I’ve learned I have been a victim of burnout myself. And sometimes I am to blame; by picking up too many extra shifts has lead me into extreme fatigue and depression. Researching this topic has opened my eyes on so many ways to avoid this. If you don’t speak up to your nurse leader nothing will change.

Researching my topic has also made me realize I have a key trait to the success of being a nurse leader, Social awareness. Being socially aware can be quite complex. It involves caring about what others are experiencing, understanding their needs, and responding to those needs. Social awareness also involves understanding social networks and norms within groups, cultures, and networks. It requires active listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively, compassionately, and empathetically with members of the group. It also requires the ability to identify the motivations, allegiances, and stakeholders of the group.
