The purpose of this discussion board is to help the DNP student develop a PRISMA statement for their literature review.  All professional literature reviews must contain a valid PRISMA to report the decisions the team/researcher/reviewers have made during the literature review and how the decisions informed the final article determination. Please review the information on the PRISMA website and use the PRISMA Flow Diagram template provided on the website.

  • This is a team assignment if working in CRNA Student project team for the course (If not, then it is an individual assignment).
  • If working in a team for this course,  team members will work on this assignment together.  One team member will upload assignment into Canvas.

Create and post a PRISMA draft flow diagram at this point in your process.  Please note that you must have included at least two or more databases in your literature search.

The boxes of the flow diagram are explained below with example numbers

  1. In the box 1, note how many articles came from your search in each database (Example:  PubMed – N=340; CINAHL – N=223)  This is your initial search numbers before you have screened any of the abstracts.  The “additional records” box is for searches in Google Scholar, conference proceedings, gray literature (make an appointment with Travis if you do not know how to search these).  Example box 2: Google Scholar – N=32
  2. Total for box 1 & box 2 = N=595 articles
  3. The 3rd box is how many articles are left after the duplicates are removed.  Reference software  like Refworks, which you can download free from the TMC Library site or EndNote (available at discount in school bookstore or online) will remove the duplicates for you. (note the number of duplicates: Example: N=120 duplicates)
  4. The 4th box is how many abstracts you screen from the list after duplicates are removed . The total of your PubMed,  CINAHL & Google Scholar searches minus the duplicates).  In this example it would be N=475.
  5. The 5th box is how many articles are excluded because they are unavailable in full text. Example: N=120
  6. The 6th box is how many  articles are full text and available for screening Example: N=355
  7. The 7th box is the number of full text articles excluded and the reasons they are excluded (use your inclusion and exclusion criteria here: Excluded for reasons:  N=15 Animal studies; N=204 not specific to topic; N=40 pediatric population; etc  Example- N=259 excluded.
  8. 8th & 9th boxes are the number of articles included in your final literature review. (Example = N=96 total articles). Make sure the numbers add up and make sense as you go along the way. (Example: Qualitative N=20; Quantitative N=76)

Additional Information:

  • Please review information in the EBP Resource Module for how to build your evidence and synthesis tables as well as your PRISMA diagram
  • If working in groups – this is a group effort.  Teams should meet to reach consensus on elements of PRISMA.
  • Access the EBPRESOURCE MODULE for the PRISMA website and other helpful information.
