- Each article annotation should be at least 150 words in length (longer is acceptable, shorter is not).
IMPORTANT:
Every student must write their own, original work written specifically for this spring 2021class, based on their individual understanding of the articles used in this assignment. Use your own words and syntax to restate information. Plagiarized papers will receive a score of “0”.

- Ruff, C. (2009). Relative Limb Strength and Locomotion in Homo habilis. American Journal of Physical Anthropology, Vol 138 (Issue 1), pp.90-100
The author uses the skeletal analysis of the subject, specifically a Homo habilis OH62 partial skeleton to make conclusions about the limb strength and movement patterns of Homo habilis. It also compares these results with Homo erectus, and comes to a relevant conclusion. It is concluded in this work, that Homo habilis was bipedal when terrestrial, but also engaged in arboreal behavior frequently. The article also uses this evidence to create a contrast between habilis and erectus, highlighting erectus’ strictly terrestrial and bipedal nature. This article also makes comparisons to modern apes, as well as modern man, and discusses the relevance of the similarities that are displayed in modern man and Homo habilis, mostly centering around the similar femur and humerus structure. I found this article helpful, as included in its namesake, understanding the basic characteristics, locomotion, and structure of Homo habilis, as well as it’s similarities and differences with other species. - Ungar, P.S. (2012). Dental Evidence for The Reconstruction of Diet in Early African Homo. Current Anthropology, Vol. 53 (Issue S6) pp.318-329
The author centers his writing in this article specifically around the dietary habits of the entirety of the homo genus, more specifically the progress that has been made into researching these dietary habits. It discusses the implication that this has for the entirety of our knowledge of the Homo genus, as well as the details and information that can be used to distinguish dietary and evolutionary traits between members of Homo. In a shorter sense, this article reviews andestablishes the fossil evidence for diets in Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, and Homo erectus, and supports the information detailed. This article was useful in a personal sense mostly for theascertaining of new information about early Homo species, specifically, I used it for Homorudolfensis, and also learned about how important and influential fossil records can be on theknowledgeand information that can be learned and understood, and how important they are.
3.Barras, C. (2014) Missing Link Fossils May Be a Jumble of Species. New Scientist, Vol 222(Issue 2964) p.11
The article in question centers around the discovery of a set of fossilized remains near the area ofMalapa, South Africa. The secondary point of this article centers around the similarities that thesefossilized remains share with another specific fossil, more specifically The Turkana Boy, whichwas discovered at the Nariokotome site in Kenya. This article clarifies the misconception andconfirms that the fossilized remains that were first identified as Australopithecus sediba, andclarifies the idea that it may be an example of fossilized Homo erectus. One of the most importantthings that I learned about this article was the significance of research and correlating evidencebetween various discoveries and work, as it resulted in lots of breakthroughs, and thedevelopment of new information. This is good information for someone in this field to know, especially when it comes to researching and compounding fossil records and the data we learnfrom them. Overall, this helped me learn a lot more about the importance of researching andcompounding information when it comes to fossil record research. Assignment: Discovery of Alzheimer and Treatment
4.Wong, K. (2006) Stranger in a New Land. Scientific American Special Edition, Vol 16 (Issue2) pp.38-47
This article details the findings of paleoanthropologists in The Republic of Georgia, more specifically Dmanisi. These findings, centering around Homo erectus, and the amount of knowledge that has been discovered, from fossilized remains to tools, the vast amount of information that could be learned was detailed in the article, as well as the potential value of the data. It is also discussed in the article that the site implies and proves the capability of Homo erectus for intercontinental travel, and is one of the first examples of it when taking this site into consideration. It also collaborates the theory that Homo erectus spread outside of Africa due to its needs for a higher quality diet, and its larger body size required larger amounts of food for energy. I believe that this article was helpful for understanding the importance of the Dmanisi site, as well as learned a lot more about the massive data than be learned from the site about the Homo erectus species. Overall, the article describes the importance and relevance that the Dmanisi site has for the knowledge and information that we currently know about Homo erectus.
- Ciochon, R. and Larick, R. (2000) Early Homo erectus Tools in China. Archaeology, Vol.53 (Issue 1) p.14
This article details the discovery of stone tools and animal bones at a dig site in Renzidong, China, which establishes the idea that Homo erectus may have been present. The article is mostly centered around the topic listed earlier, but also touches on the difficulty of archaeology and research within eastern Asia mostly due to technical concerns. Aside from the concerns surrounding archaeology in eastern Asia, the most relevant subject is the proposed theory of Homo Erectus and its establishment in eastern Asia. The article goes on to list and detail the findings that were deliberated and determined to be relevant to the idea that Homo erectus had established itself within the area of Renzidong, China. This article is overall, a great demonstration to show the widespread nature that Homo erectus had during its time, as well as the capabilities that it had. I found this article helpful to further showcase my understanding of the capability of Homo erectus, as well as the widespread nature of said species.
