NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants
Permalink:
Development of a theoretical body of knowledge, unique to the nursing domain, is directly proportional to equivalent strides taken in the area of research. Effective integration of theory and practice is essential for the survival and growth of the nursing profession. To continue the cycle of meaningful advancements, researchers need to identify barriers and overcome them. Along with this, they also need to take note of factors that stimulate the process of theory development. Let’s examine how knowledge has played a crucial role in setting obstacles in the path of theory development on the one hand and, on the other, how it has facilitated the development of nursing theories. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment
| How did knowledge act as a barrier to the process of theory development? | How did knowledge act as a stimulant in the process of theory development? |
| Use of the knowledge of other disciplines was long seen as superior to that developed by nurses. | Knowledge breeds knowledge; existing theory now provides impetus for further refinement and development. |
| Other disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, and physiology, prepared their students to do research in nursing and develop theories for nurses, rather than encouraging nursing to prepare its own students to do research and theory development. | Old paradigms are challenged by new ones as they are influenced by social factors, factors in healthcare, and practice changes. |
| The National League for Nursing (NLN) requirement for colleges and universities often resulted in the development of curricula with esoteric content. | The new worldview is less mechanistic, more congruent with women’s views of science and nurses’ views of health; it is more wholistic and ecological. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment |
| The knowledge base developed was unrelated to practice and was far removed from preparing students to be change agents in practice. | Nurses are trained to observe record, analyze, and solve problems, and this unique source of knowledge has provided research efforts that are, finally, far more based in the practice realm than ever before. |
| The academic focus was on conceptual models as a way to develop theories and theoretical thinking, and often lost sight of the reason to conceptualize in the first place, that is, the underpinnings of nursing practice and patient care. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment | Nurses spend long hours with patients and family, and are better able to identify and understand patterns of phenomena, rather than perceive health and nursing as a series of isolated incidents. |
| Development of conceptual models and theories was encouraged as a way to justify and define the status of nursing as a profession, and required the existence of theories. | The move toward the development of middle-range theories, rather than grand theories and conceptual models, has allowed nurses involved directly in the provision of care to ask practice-based questions, do research to answer those questions, and develop new information on a more manageable scale. |

Article 2 Review Example
Hegge, M. (2013). Nightingale’s environmental theory. Nursing Science Quarterly, 26(3), 211–219.
In this article the author examines Nightingale’s life and how her experiences eventually lead to her environmental theory. Nightingale started her life in a wealthy family, which gifted her higher education (Hegge, 2013). Despite her privileged life she saw the despair of poverty that affected many of those around her. Nightingale felt a calling to help these people and wanted to become a nurse, but her family strongly disapproved of her choice (Hegge, 2013). However, Nightingale was determined to help those less fortunate. She then started to recruit other women to become nurses as well to help those less fortunate. Through her endeavors Nightingale started to compose her ideals that nature was the driving factor of health (Hegge, 2013). Nightingale began to really solidify her ideals during her time on the front lines. When Nightingale first arrived at the battlefront the environment was unsanitary; there were rats , filth, and injured men riddled with disease everywhere (Hegge, 2013). Besides offering a cleaning healing environment, Nightingale also brought hope to these soliders; she would walk all the cots with her lamp every night to check on all of her patients (Hegge, 2013). After the war Nightingale took her ideals to India. While establishing a military presence in the area, Nightingale reformed the barracks just as she did before. She took a filthy environment and cultivated an environment and cleanliness (Hegge, 2013).
Nightingale worked her entire life to better humanity. During her life’s work she created the environmental theory nurses still use today. This theory brings necessities to patients, which promotes better outcomes. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment

Hegge, M. (2013). Nightingale’s environmental theory. Nursing Science Quarterly, 26(3), 211–219.
Florence Nightingale was among the first to address the impact that the environment has on patients. She mentioned sanitation, ventilation, and infection rates as well as color, lighting, and noise being major contributors to the overall health outcomes (Zborowsky, 2014). Nightingale observed the direct impact that these aspects had on patients and made it a priority to help change the environment and the way that care is given in order to help the patients as much as possible. The identified areas that made the most impact on the environment were noise, light, air, ventilation, cleanliness, and variety (Zborowsky, 2014). These areas not only affected the patient, but also the nurses and other staff. If they are addressed and corrected, it will make for a better work environment, which will in turn make the care they provide even better. Nightingale once said that “unnecessary noise is the most cruel absence of care which can inflicted either on sick or well” (Zborowsky, 2014). It was also noted that some of the same issues are being seen to this day due to diminishing resources and an increasingly complex population. The design process of medical facilities should incorporate nursing staff to ensure that it accommodates in most situations and for the better for the nurses. In reality, it takes a multi-disciplinary team to make sure that the design is beneficial to all. This team should include medical professionals, environmental services staff, sub-contractors (electrical, plumbing and medical gas), management, and non-medical people (to represent the patient), and the design team. With the collaboration of this group, they could come up with the most functional spaces that meet criteria from all aspects of patient care. The studies reviewed in this article found that nurses were aware of the role that design plays in patient outcomes (Zborowsky, 2014). This subject is something that should continue to be researched and studied due to the everchanging needs of the nursing profession.

Bayuo, J. (2017). Case Study in Caring Application of Watson’s Theory of Human Caring to
End of Life Care in the Burns Intensive Care Unit: A Case Report. International Journal for Human Caring, 21(3), 142–144.
Case Study in Caring Application of Watson’s Theory of Human Caring to End of Life Care in the Burns Intensive Care Unit: A Case Report
The case report involves a 22-year-old burn victim K.K. and the care that was provided to him while he was in the intensive care unit for life-threatening burns. Burns affect a patient physically by leading to fluid volume loss, pain, and electrolyte imbalances (Bayuo, 2017). But burns also affect and individually mentally and spiritually and they now have to live a life with decreased function and face the psychological impact that death may occur (Bayuo, 2017). As a nurse, dealing with burns has been found to be exhausting due to the physical trauma that they must care for (Bayuo, 2017). The case study listed is about a patient named K.K, a 22-year-old male that suffered extensive burn injuries to his bilateral upper and lower extremities, posterior trunk, and bilateral fractures to both of his legs (Bayuo, 2017).
Jean Watson’s theory of caring was utilized by the nurses caring for K.K. in which the goal was to connect with him in a genuine way and create a transpersonal relationship (Bayuo, 2017). A transpersonal relationship involves being present and open minded with a patient so that both the nurse and patient can connect spiritually and emotionally (Bayuo, 2017). By creating this relationship K.K. was found to become more interactive with the medical personnel around him and he began talking about memories and friendships he has created in his life. This transpersonal relationship created a trusting environment where K.K. was able to live out his final days with a good quality of life when referring to the mind and spirit (Bayuo, 2017). Watson’s theory in this case study was considered a success and provided K.K. with a quality of life even in his final days (Bayuo, 2017). NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment
Environmental Theory of Florence Nightingale Sample 2
Nurses should always strive to create a safe environment for patients regardless of the care they need. The most crucial responsibility that nurses are tasked with is to utilize their knowledge and resources to assist patients while they recover. This is the definition given by Florence Nightingale in the environmental theory. This theory urges the nurses to use the environment to their advantage while aiming to gradually restore patients’ health.
In the article, Nightingale Environmental Theory: The Mother of Nursing by Karimi and Alavi, the authors begin by defining the environment that Nightingale meant. The theory defines the environment by researching more about various cultures and circumstances that could help nurses leave more impact in the patients’ lives. The environment also has social policies that demean the health of human beings thus causing suffering and making the population unsafe. The article also shows the life of Florence and her achievements in modernizing the nursing practice.
The article by Gilbert on Nightingale Environmental theory shows how the theory has transformed the nursing practice. The reforms made by the environmental theory are crucial in the practice of infection control since it has been hugely applied during the global pandemic that recently affected different parts of the world. Considered one of the most deadly viruses in the world, coronavirus patients have had a rough time coping with the virus. Even with a high number of deaths recorded, infection control is an integral part of nursing that has made it easier for nurses to create a safe environment for patients affected by the virus. Nurses have continuously worked hard to promote good health, well-being, and good outcomes for patients. The nursing profession has a high demand since nurses are expected to change patients’ lives while meeting the global need for providing quality healthcare services.

Sample Approach
The first concept I have chosen within the cognitive theory of learning is the cognitive development of nurses. A factor that influences cognitive development in nurses is cognitive maturity. The cognitive maturity of nurses affects a nurse’s interest and willingness to engage in clinical research and how the nurse utilizes this knowledge (Nickerson & Thurkettle, 2013). It is thought that the more cognitively mature a nurse is the better chance they will contribute to research and implement evidenced based practice in their clinical practice, thus increasing their cognitive development (Nickerson & Thurkettle, 2013). Nurses that may approach new evidenced based practice with caution and remain hesitant to incorporate new up to date information in their practice put a halt to their own cognitive development with their decreased willingness to learn. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment
The second concept in the cognitive theory relates to motivation in nursing. In the article I have chosen it talked about how motivation in nursing is greatly influenced by the work environment (Papathanasiou et al., 2014). Workplaces that offered nurse more autonomy were found to have nurses with higher reported levels of motivation. Also, workplaces that had less turnover were found to have nurses with higher levels of motivation (Papathanasiou et al., 2014). The concept of motivation in this article deals with how outside forces effect a nurses motivation.
In the textbook cognitive development refers to the different ways nurses’ approach and respond to learning situations (Butts & Rich, 2017). In addition, motivation in nursing as stated by the cognitive theory of learning is based on the learner’s goals and expectations (Butts & Rich, 2017). The cognitive theory of learning states the importance of setting realistic expectations versus expectations that are too farfetched or expectations that are too low.
Cognitive development applies to my clinical practice because I am constantly faced with new tasks that I must learn in a timely manner. The way I respond to this new learning opportunity greatly affects the patient as well. If I am hesitant and resistant to this learning opportunity my patient may have a delay in care and I will also be affecting the way I care for future patients as well. In addition, I am frequently setting expectations of how I will progress in my nursing career. An expectation that I have set in the past was to ask minimal questions once I was done with my residency program. I have found that this expectation was unrealistic because asking questions in nursing comes with the territory and is necessary. The realistic expectation that I should have come up with is to attempt to come up with a solution to my question in my own head before asking the question, and comparing my own ideas to the answer I am provided.

NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment – Week 2 Project
This week you will turn in a draft of your “Personal Philosophy and Theoretical Concepts” paper. Your paper should contain the following sections:
- Nursing Autobiography: A brief (1 page) discussion of your background in nursing. This does not include future goals.
- The Four Metaparadigms: Describe what the literature says about the basic four metaparadigms/concepts of patient, nurse, health, and environment. Do not relate the metaparadigms to the theory you have chosen.
- Briefly describe the theory you have chosen.
- Two Practice-Specific Concepts: in separate subsections discuss each of your two concepts:What is the definition of the concept (outside of the theory)? How does your theorist define your concept? How does this concept apply to your clinical setting? Give an example of how nurses in your area provide care that correlates with the theorist’s definition of the concept.
You MUST use the attached template to complete your paper.
The paper is to be thoroughly researched and well documented, with relevant material from the nursing theorists presented incorporated into the paper. Use the current edition of the APA Manual throughout the paper. Sources should focus on references from nursing theory but may also include conceptual and theoretical material from other professional domains. The paper, excluding references or appendices, is to be limited to 3-5 pages. Writing should be succinct and well organized, as it is impossible for the facilitator to evaluate form and content separately.
