Justification for the Choice of the Cultural Group

The Jewish people have been subject to discrimination in the United States throughout history. For instance, Jewish cemeteries have been desecrated across the country, and anti-Semitic sentiments characterized the 2016 election. White Supremacists have used anti-Semitic language in the past as observed in Charlottesville (Toback, 2017). Owing to a history of discrimination in the country, the Jewish developed their own healthcare to overcome the challenges in accessing care. One of the centers of care created by the Jews was the Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, whose target population was the Jews and poor parents. Nevertheless, the hospital closed down in 1996, but it continued to operate as a charitable organization providing care to the Jewish population (Blakemore, 2017). While the Jews have largely integrated into the American White population, they are considered different from the Caucasian race because of their unique religious beliefs and insistence on spiritual healing combined with conventional medicine. Thus, it is worth focusing on this population in the reduction of disparities as proposed by the Healthy People 2020.

Overview of Healthy People 2020 Goals

Healthy People 2020 has a number of goals. First, it aims to eliminate health disparities, achieve equity in health provision, enhance the health of all communities, and ensure high equality and longer lives for everyone through the prevention of preventable premature death, injury, disability, and disease. It also aims to encourage healthy behaviors among individuals and communities (CDC, 2014). To reduce disparities affecting the Jewish community at the federal level, I would work closely with HHS, which advocates for quality and non-discriminatory healthcare services (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2019). Similarly, I will work closely with the Department of Public health at the state and local levels to eliminate these disparities.

Overview of Healthy People 2020 Objectives

Healthy People 2020 has a number of objectives. First, it plans to ameliorate health for every American. For the past decades, Healthy People 2020 has been monitoring the progress in the healthcare sector to promote collaborations between sectors and across communities. According to Healthy People 2020 (2014), one of its objectives include the empowerment of individuals to enable them to make prudent health decisions. It aims to measure the impact of preventive measures and create health improvement priorities. Healthy People 2020 is also engaged in the identification of critical data collection and research evaluation needs (Healthy People 2020, 2014). Further, Healthy People 2020 also commits to working with multiple sectors to improve practices and strengthening policies using the best available knowledge and evidence. In relation to the Healthy People 2020 goals, it is imperative to embrace the alternative and complementary treatment methods of the Jewish communities to ensure the best health. This necessitates working with HHS and CDC, which will promote health for the Jewish community at the federal level. The Department of Public health will help in eliminating disparities at the local and state levels, which will help in the realization of the Healthy People 2020 goals for the Jewish community.

Overview of Healthy People 2020 Determinants of Health

Healthy People 2020 identifies a range of environmental, economic, social, and personal factors that affect the status of health. These are referred to as health determiners. One of these factors is policymaking at the federal, state, and local level. Such policies influence population and individual health. Social factors also influence the health status of individuals and communities. They include the conditions of the environment in which individuals and communities live (Healthy People 2020, 2014). Lack of access to healthcare, including the lack of health insurance cover, contributes to undesirable health outcomes. Some behaviors within communities, and in particular individuals, could hinder the attainment of good health. Risky behaviors like smoking and having multiple sex partners also predispose people to poor health. The Jewish community faces more risk relative to other communities in the country regarding breast cancer. Nevertheless, the risk is higher among the Ashkenazi Jewish population that does not support intermarriage with members of the larger Jewish community. This group has low cancer screening rates, which increases the risk even further (Tkatch et al., 2014). At the federal level, working with CDC will help get rid in the disparities associated with access to care for this community. Therefore, I will work with the Department of Public health at the state and local level for the same purpose.

Overview of Healthy People 2020 Health Status

Health status denotes the current health and needs of communities. It is measured through monitoring the life expectancy in relation to global measures, self-assessed health status, mortality rates, years of potential life lost, the prevalence of chronic diseases, as well as limitation of activity. In general, the American population is doing well in terms of the ability to engage in physical activity (Healthy People 2020, 2014). Further, the health of the Jewish community in the United States is auspicious. The Jewish people embrace both conventional medicine and alternative treatment methods. Nevertheless, negative political sentiments may hinder access to care. Such disparities may be prevented by working with HHS at the federal level and the Department of Public Health at the state and local levels.

It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
