Week 3: Hiring the Best Candidates

Sam Pederson received several applications for the X-ray technician/medical assistant job at Leeland Radiological Laboratory. He carefully reviewed each one and identified which candidates he felt were the strongest and which candidates he did not think were a good fit. Sam reviewed Jane’s resume and noticed she had completed her    associate degree just a few months ago at the local community college and had an excellent grade point average. He also noticed how she volunteered time with the local animal shelter. Sam Pederson then created a short list of individuals he wanted to interview.

Once you have recruited interested candidates who meet the qualifications, the next step in hiring a new employee is to determine which candidate is the best fit for the position. This is best accomplished by thoroughly reviewing each candidate’s applications, resumes, and portfolios. It may also be beneficial to review the candidate’s online profile prior to interviewing the candidates.

This week, you will identify a job in healthcare that you are interested in, and you will create a resume that you would include in your application for that job. You also will analyze the role of social media in the recruiting and hiring process. Finally, you will identify terms and concepts related to selecting job candidates and organizational fit.

Discussion: Creating and Reviewing Resumes

The resume that job applicants include in their application can open the door to the next steps of the hiring process. Resumes can also be the reason candidates do not get an interview.
