Discussion: Hot and Dry Desert Biome
You will select a BIOME, THEN
- Read your textbook about the assigned biome. Find & study the distribution map of that biome.
- On a world map, find a location (let’s call it X) of interest to you that is situated in the assigned biome. (e.g., Winton, Minnesota is surrounded by large tracks of boreal forest)
- Find information on-line about the weather (monthly average temperature & monthly precipitation) at that location X.
- Use the weather information to construct a climate diagram for that location. If you don’t have the textbook, check out this website: . Make sure you use ºC for temperature, and mm for precipitation. It’s OK to draw by hand if you don’t know how to use computer to help you draw.
- Find information on-line about the natural world at location X. Get to know the details of a land animal (e.g., moose), an aquatic species (e.g., northern pike, tardigrades, or elodea), and a plant (e.g., white pine) each found at location X. These are the representative species of your assigned biomes.
- Put emphasis on how they adapt to the weather of that particular biome. Tell me their adaptive features that make the plant/animal fit in that environment.
- Submit a copy of your handout to me through Canvas.
You must participate in this activity to earn points.
You must include the following in your submission—
- Show the distribution of your assigned biome, and indicate your location X. Show the climate diagram of location X. (4 points)
- Introduce the weather pattern of that biome. Discuss the patterns and trends present and any unique aspects present. (5 points)
- A paragraph discussing the representative plant. Be sure to include its role in the ecosystem as well as any specific needs/requirements of the species. (5 points)
- A paragraph discussing the representative land animal. Be sure to include its role in the ecosystem as well as any specific needs/requirements of the species. (5 points)
- A paragraph discussing the representative aquatic species. Be sure to include its role in the ecosystem as well as any specific needs/requirements of the species. (5 points)
- Some personal reflection on doing this project. (5 points)
If you have any problem finding weather information of a location X, you can visit this website [Select a Point Climatology]–
On the left of the page, you see a world map. You can click-drag-release to enlarge it. If you know the coordinate of location X. You can find it on that map easily.
On the right side of the page, you will see the temperature & precipitation diagrams of location X. You can then get the weather information from there.
