Clinical and Management Tracts Devan Frison NSG3005 February 21, 2017 Instructor: Kelly Plant South University The nursing field is a rapid growing profession. There are many avenues you can take ultimately to become a registered nurse. Some routes that can be taken are diploma, associates (ADN), and bachelors (BSN). The diploma program can take from 12-15 months, this program is becoming extremely rare and not seen as much. The associates program takes about 2 years. The majority of the nurses in the United States initially get their education in an ADN program, and 50% of nurses eventually earn a BSN, Black, B. P. (2014). Nurses that hold a BSN typically have some extra advancement opportunities over the other license holders with a diploma or associates. Advancement opportunities you have as a professional nurse with a BSN:  Make more money        Opens up pathways to advance on the clinical ladders. The ability to assume leadership roles in most health care settings. Prepares and also gives you the option to move into graduate programs and advanced practice certified programs. Career mobility Decreases the barrier to nursing’s achievement of professional status Increases professional status and power Associates with improved patient incomes With nursing being one of the largest professions in the United States, there are endless opportunities and such a wide based range of settings that nurses seek employment in. There are different ttracts you can take within the professional nursing role. Clinical pathway:     The ability to move up the clinical ladder Consistently staying in direct patient care. Salary increase, more responsibility that needs to be assumed. This opens up the opportunity to work on specialty units, most specialty units require many years of experience or higher education. Management pathway:       In charge of all activities on the unit Resource management Quality improvement Increased accountability Patient care Personnel selection and evaluation I would choose to pursue the management pathway. This track has such a wide base of roles and responsibilities. I would have the opportunity to experience a little of everything. Discussion: professional development plan
This will definitely guarantee endless learning opportunities and knowledge needed to be an “All American of Nurses.” As a part of management you are in charge of activities, ensuring patients enjoy their stay by doing something fun and therapeutic during treatment. Employees will also have a better outlook on coming to work knowing they are coming into a positive fun environment, in which affects attendance rates and would lower call-out rates. I would have a chance to conduct research on how we could continuously improve processes and outcomes of health care services. Participating in selection and evaluation for the company or unit floor, this gives you the ability to hand pick hardworking, compassionate, honest, loyal employees, that will have an all-around positive impression on anyone they come in contact with. Evaluation, ensuring that everyone is on the same level, and if we are not, taking the necessary steps to make sure the team is on one page. The one thing I like the most and I believe is most important to me is still having that chance to have my hands in patient care. I would never want to lose patient/family contact completely. Patient care, is the number one reason I chose this profession in the first place. That is what’s so great about nursing you can have many roles in one giant role like, management. With the management tract you can advocate for your patients as well as your employees and make an even bigger difference. References Black, B. P. (2014). Su Total Mentor Nurse Devan Frison NSG3005 Instructor Kelley Plant South University February 28, 2017 MENTOR NURSE My report is based on an interview that I held with Nichole Smith, a practicing Nurse at St. Johns hospital. She started practicing at the hospital three years after completing her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Despite the fact that she is still considerably young in her profession there are several attributes that make her an outstanding and admirable person. These attributes include her tenacity, patience, optimism, methodology, empathy and gregariousness. Nichole has wide knowledge on important subjects such as chemistry, nutrition, anatomy and psychology that makes her tenacity exceptionally high. She is highly gregarious basing on the fact that a few minutes before we started the interview she had been consoling a family that had lost their teenage son to a drug overdose. This was actually the first thing she talked about as soon as we met, albeit maintaining utmost confidentiality of the situation. Right from her description of the parents’ predicament, it was clear that she was very empathetic to them. As I asked more about the profession, she told me about some of the worst cases she had dealt with especially those relating to terminally ill patients. She, however, stated that even though terminally ill patients had no chance of becoming fully healed from their conditions she knew that a positive attitude towards life had the power to lengthen their lives as well the quality of life that they lived as proved by a study done by Patrick and Laschinger (2006). Discussion: professional development plan
Talking about terminally ill patients in this kind of way with so much hope shows the attribute of optimism and positivity in the way that she dealt with her patients. To encourage patients to have a positive view of life requires a lot of grace and patience and these are other attributes that stood out. She explained that she had helped many terminally ill patients to have a completely different view of life and therefore allow them to live better lives in the limited time they still had. It is, therefore, a clear indication of her patience and proper use of methodologies to achieve both professionalism and address patients at their individual needs. Furthermore, her beliefs, attitudes, philosophies and values made me view her with an even higher regard as a guiding light on my own path. Nichole believes that nursing is a calling and not just a job to earn a paycheck from, Patrick and Laschinger (2006). She said that she chose to become a nurse because she felt the desire to help others just like her mother who is also a nurse. Just like her, I have always wanted to be a nurse because I wanted to have the opportunity to help other people during their time of need. She tries to maintain a healthy lifestyle which involves a lot of exercises, stress control, and healthy eating habits. I have met nurses in the past who smoke and drink, something that I have always thought of as being wrong and contradictory to the profession. How can nurses possibly “preach water and drink wine” my goal is to become a role model to my patients and in order to do so I need to maintain a healthy lifestyle like Nichole. She went on to tell me that after being in the nursing field for some time someone may actually start to forget that patients are individuals. Many nurses often start to treat patients as just conditions and disease instead of individuals, Chinn and Kramer (1983). Nichole says that she tries her best to remember all the names of all the patients that she attends to; this reminds her that each individual patient is an individual who has specific needs and requires specific attention. Having this kind of attitude towards patients is also one of my greatest goals. I know that nurses see a lot of patients but treating each one of them as an individual is what can make the difference and would enable me to become an outstanding nurse as well as give me the gratification of being of benefit to others. She also enlightened me that she is currently taking part-time classes to help her improve the service that she gives her patients. Just like her, I consider that as a nurse I will have the responsibility to continuously improve myself through perpetual learning in order to improve the quality of service to my patients. Nichole is an emergency and trauma nurse, something that perfectly matches with her philosophies, attitudes, and beliefs. Even though she is perfect for emergency and trauma cases she is also fit for holistic nursing, psychiatric nursing as well as oncology nursing. From the interview she demonstrates her ability to help patients who are terminally ill to live better quality lives; this is a good trait for both psychiatric and oncological nursing (Wade, 1999). She has an immense ability in counseling patients and the relatives of patients alike something that makes her very suited for ERs. As soon as a patient is admitted to the ER their relatives are often usually restless to know what is happening and how their loved ones are doing. This is a tumultuous task that requires nurses with Nichole’s qualities, Chinn and Kramer (1983). Reference Chinn, P. L., & Kramer, M. K. (1983). Theory and nursing a systematic approach. Orem, D. Timeliness Su Total American Association of Nurse Practitioners Devan Frison NSG3005 Instructor: Kelley Plant South University March 7, 2017 AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS There are very many nursing organizations in the US, one organization that really caught my eye is the American Association of Nurse practitioners. It was founded through the merging of two nursing organizations; the American Collage of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. It is tasked with advocating for the rights of nurses in the country in a way the nurses can have better working conditions to deliver the best services to their patients. Members of the organizations believe the organizations are part of the solution to ending the obstacles facing the nursing profession in the US. Wood and Haber (2005) Aims and Activities The AANP has the following main goals: 1. To improve the access to healthcare services and facilities where Nurse practitioners operate. 2. Discussion: professional development plan
To improve the confidence of the public in nurse practitioners by enhancing the improvement of satisfactory scores given by patients. 3. To upraise the standards of customer service rendered by Nurse Practitioners to patients. 4. To improve customer satisfaction on physician references. 5. To push for the establishment of proper recognition and reward programs for nurses as motivation factor to improve nursing practice. 6. To push for the establishment of proper communication channels to ensure the flow of communication in all the levels of the organization. 7. To push for increased recruitment of nurse practitioners in the US as well as their retention. Job security is one of the most fundamental aspects of productivity in any field including nursing. 8. The members of the organization are from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, AANP therefore pushes for increased awareness about diversity in order to enhance integration of its members. While seeking to achieve the above aims the AANP is involved in several activities such the modernization of laws that govern the practice of nursing in the US. This helps to ensures as well the full access to the services of nurse practitioners. In an attempt to accomplish these two aims the AANP has been instrumental the in the passing of at least thirsty state laws American Nurses Association (2010). These state laws not only look out for the Nurse practitioners but also their patients. It is therefore more than logical to say that AANP is an association that is advocating for the improvement of service in the health sector for all Americans. Some of the most significant include signature recognition laws, laws for admitting privileges, prescriptive authori …
