Social Determinates of Health (SDOH)

The social determiners of health are factors which may impact the health status and general quality of life of an individual. The interviewed family (Redington’s family) is affected by several SDOH such as food, water, social and personal relations, employee safety, quality of education among other financial and social factors (Thornton et al., 2016). Redington family has access to clean air, water, and reside in a clean environment, which has significantly contributed to the families good health status. However, when it comes to food, Redington’s family rarely check their diet which is composed of many calories that rendered Brandon overweight while still a kid. Redington himself once suffered from gout due to excess consumption of meat. Financially, the family is currently stable and in a position to afford health insurance. Their social and personal interactions are quite poor, as the couple is very busy and has little time to themselves. They also exercise very minimally, and this might pose a challenge to their overall health status.

Age Appropriate Screening

Medical screening is made up of a series of tests conducted to a particular patient by a physician to check for specific ailments or health conditions before they cause severe medical complication. Reddington’s family has a family physician who needs to conduct regular health screening.

Mr. Raddington: At the age of 45, Redington is highly predisposed to rectal prolapse and colon cancer and should thus have a colonoscopy (Virgini, Meindl-Fridez, Battegay, & Zimmerli, 2015). He should also be screened for blood pressure, given that he works very hard, rarely exercises and of advanced age, with high intake of calories that may put him at the risk of developing high blood pressure. Given that he once suffered from gout, his serum urate levels must also be monitored to make sure that he does not develop the condition again. Other essential tests include hepatitis c screening and blood sugar levels.

Mrs. Raddington: It is vital for Mrs. Redington at the age of 40 to undergo frequent breast screening. This will help the doctor note any abnormalities such as fibroadenomas, which can be removed at an early stage and prevent cancer. Just like her husband, her blood pressure and sugar levels must also be measured due to their extremely busy life with great focus to their employment (Virgini, Meindl-Fridez, Battegay, & Zimmerli, 2015). Another test that she should undergo include cholesterol screening, diabetes screening, and cervical cancer screening.
