Learning Outcomes and Strategies Discussion
- In Part 2 of the scenario from Week 1, you are the new Dean of Nursing in the fictitious University of the Seven Seas, College of Nursing (USS CON) and you are tasked to design a BSN curriculum for the new nursing program. This week you will write your learning outcomes (similar to your goals but more narrow in focus), and evaluation strategies. Remember that program outcomes flow from and are reflective of your nursing department philosophy and goals. For Part 2 of the Scenario you will develop your learning outcomes and evaluation strategies. You will create a 6–8-page paper (excluding title page, references, and Appendices) addressing these items. Be sure to include:
- Learning outcomes that represent a vision of what students would achieve. Learning Outcomes and Strategies Discussion
- Evaluation strategies that will illustrate how you will measure that your learners met the learning outcomes, through standardized tests and other means.
- Program, Course, and Student Evaluations. Use the following questions to develop these evaluation strategies:
Program evaluation:
- What are the accrediting bodies’ requirements for program evaluation?
- Who will be responsible for preparing the report?
- How often does a report have to be written?
Course evaluation:
- Does the university have a standard course evaluation form?
- What information would be included in a course evaluation form?
- Who would be responsible for administering the course evaluations?
- How will you ensure student confidentiality and privacy?
Student evaluation:
- How often will you do formative evaluations of the students?
- How often will you do summative evaluations of the students?
- How will you measure that your learners have met the learning outcomes (through standardized tests and other means)?
- What will be the grading scale for the program?
- How will the program deal with students who grieve their grades?
Your learning outcomes and evaluation strategies should be completed in a Word document and submitted to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.Be sure to follow proper APA guidelines in your paper.

Running head: IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS Identifying Nursing Mission, Philosophy and Goals Arlene Manders South University NSG6103 Dr. Nancy Peifer Neil 1 IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS Identifying Nursing Mission, Philosophy and Goals Mission Statement The college of nursing in the University of Seven Seas is founded upon realization that the community demands and deserves high quality and safe healthcare for all. The availability of trained healthcare workers is a prelude to meeting this societal demand. Subsequently, the college of nursing within the University of Seven Seas must align its curriculum to the societal healthcare needs and the recommendations of IOM and QSEN on nursing education. One key element of the curriculum will be its commitment to training a diverse workforce, that will meet the diverse healthcare needs of the community. IOM report recommends that the nursing programs should be diverse such that they produce a diverse workforce that can take on different challenges that the work environment and varied community needs present (American Nursing Association, 2011). Therefore, the curriculum for the BSN nurses will have to provide an opportunity for nurses to select from diverse possibilities of career paths and specializations. The other key element of the curriculum to be developed will be the possibility of it to produce leaders. IOM and QSEN reports recommend that education institutions should train and encourage nurses to take leadership at various levels within the healthcare realm (American Nursing Association, 2011). This recommendation can be implemented if the curriculum to be proposed emphasizes the leadership role of future nurses and provides an environment for nurturing leaders. 2 IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS The mission of the college of nursing in the University of Sevens Sea will, therefore, capture the need for a diverse workforce that is ready to lead the change process in the field of nursing. Learning Outcomes and Strategies Discussion
The diversity among nurses will not only fulfil the diverse needs that exist in the society but most importantly produce leaders of change towards more inclusive and safer healthcare. The mission of the college of nursing is, therefore, to offer a conducive environment for the training of professional nurses with diverse career paths and providing an opportunity for nurturing leaders and change makers. Curriculum Philosophy The BSN curriculum of the college of nursing will be based on certain beliefs that will then guide teaching and learning by trainers and students respectively. One of the beliefs is the need for evidence-based practice to guide nursing practice. Any action or approach taken by a nurse to solve a particular problem should be based on certain pieces of evidence to ensure the safety of both the nurse and the patients. The IOM and QSEN reports lay emphasis on safe healthcare affordable to all (American Nursing Association, 2011). Safety issues in the healthcare environment are likely to arise where mistakes are made by the healthcare professionals such as nurses. One way to avoid mistakes is to use research findings as the basis for actions. This is the reason the college of nursing in the University of Sevens Sea intend to base its curriculum on the philosophy that evidence-based practice will ensure the safety of the healthcare environment, patients and workers. The curriculum will also be based on the philosophy that nursing practice thrive well in a collaborative and research environment. The curriculum will thus look forward to training nurses who embrace teamwork and value research and other collaborative work. The IOM and the QSEN reports urge training programs and institutions to expand opportunities 3 IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS for learners to be exposed to research works and practical work as well (American Nursing Association, 2011). This recommendation is consistent with the curriculum philosophy because we believe that student nurses should be engaged in research work to enable them to appreciate the value of evidence and thus embrace evidence-based practice. However, the curriculum will also be designed in such a way that it permits collaboration with other institution to allow nursing students to gain practical experience. At the college level, the curriculum will encourage teamwork and collaborations to enable students to develop these collaborative skills that they will need in their future practice. The curriculum will be founded on the belief that success in the nursing profession is not based on financial gain. The curriculum should teach students to become professional nurses who prioritise their patients’ wellbeing above financial gains attached to the services that they offer to the patients. This philosophy will be instrumental in inculcating the spirits of upholding ethical standards among nurses who get their training from the college of nursing. The curriculum will train nurses who do not exploit patients economically. This philosophy is also consistent with the recommendations on the IOM report. The IOM report recommends for emphasis to be laid of accessibility of healthcare to all (American Nursing Association, 2011). However, lack of money by the poor patients and overemphasis on the financial gain by nurses may hinder the ability of the poor to access quality healthcare. For example, nurses can demand unreasonable pay rise to an extent that they boycott duties when their demands are not met, thus hindering the ability of the poor, who are not able to access private health facilities, to access quality healthcare. Therefore, the philosophy that success for nurses is not pegged on financial gain helps inspire ethical practice and 4 IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS ensure the poor can access quality healthcare that the nurses provide. The program is also based on the belief that all barriers to the accessibility of the healthcare environment should be removed. At the college of nursing at the University of Sevens Sea, we believe that future nurses are key to the removal of these barriers. For example, the curriculum will aim to produce empathetic nurses who are committed to attending to patients from diverse background and health conditions without prejudice, professional bias or stereotypes. However, to demonstrate the college’s commitment to these barriers, the curriculum will be designed in such a way that it accommodates nursing students from various background and respect cultures of diverse students. Program Goals The curriculum goals of the college of nursing are based on four curriculum philosophies discussed above and support the achievement of the mission stated. Learning Outcomes and Strategies Discussion
The first goal of the curriculum is to produce and support a conducive and collaborative learning environment for nursing students. For example, the curriculum will give room for students to gain practical experience from other institutions and engage in collaborative assignments as well (Flinders University, 2019). The second goal is to produce competent and empathetic nurses with diverse skills. The diversity of skill is needed to satisfy the diverse healthcare demand in the society while competency and empathy will help address the safety and accessibility of healthcare that is recommended in the IOM report. The goal is also to produce leaders within the nursing profession. The nurses with the leadership skill will take leadership roles in various bodies 5 IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS within the healthcare environment, and steer change towards the future of the nursing profession as recommended in the IOM report (Glass, 2006). The fourth goal of the curriculum is to facilitate the transition for learners from being students towards being nurses. The IOM report recommends that universities should ensure students take transition so that they are ready to take up the responsibility of the nursing profession and the challenges involved (American Nursing Association, 2011). Besides the administration of transition courses, the curriculum will also ensure it reduces the parity between what students believe in and the actual experience in the field of nursing to ease this transition. 6 IDENTIFYING NURSING MISSION, PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS References American Nursing Association.
