Hi everyone,

I am in the FNP program at Rivier. I currently work in a primary care clinic as a triage nurse and have been at my current job for 3 years now. I enjoy working in primary care and look forward to be able to further my and my career in this area.  One thing that I feel represents me as a person is that I am a mom. I have 3 children of my own and my significant other has two children. Outside of school/work my life revolves around our children. I enjoy caring for them, spending time for them, and watching them grown and learn.

After this weeks reading assignments I was intrigued by the history of the nurse anesthetists. This is an area of nursing in which I did not know much about. The role began during the American Civil War (Tracey & O’Grady, 2019) and has developed greatly.  Nurses started providing these services to patients without much education and typically when a physician was unavailable (Tracey & O’ Grady, 2019). Overtime it was determined that nurses were not able to perform these services due to the increased scientific and specialized nature (Tracey & O’Grady, 2019).  I was surprised to read that when Dagmar Nelson has sued the judges ruled in his and the court established a legal precedent in which nurses practicing anesthesia was within their scope of practice when done under a physician (Tracye & O’Grady, 2019). Today nurses must have in-depth education in order to practice anesthesia. I  think the history of nurse anesthetists positively influenced today’s role of the advanced practice nurse. I think the beginning of this role showed that APRNs are capable of the role but guidance is still needed. It helped to create the education requirements that nurses need today and created a role in which nurses can fill to help reduce shortages in this area of healthcare.

Hello everyone,

I am in the FNP track and I am currently working in an outpatient pulmonary and sleep medicine practice in New Jersey. I have been in this position for 14 years. One thing that represents me as a person would be that I am blessed to be the mother of three great children ages 11, 10, and 5.

Based on what I read in Hamric and Hanson’s chapters this week, one of the historical forces that influenced the advanced practice nursing role that interested me was war. Of course, it makes complete sense, but it’s enlightening to consider all of the reaches that these major events have on a country. I feel that it positively affected the demand for advanced practice nurses and helped to highlight how they can be used to fill the gap when shortages are experienced. In fact, Tracy & O’Grady (2019) state, “as was the case in wars of other eras, the war in Vietnam provided nurses with opportunities to stretch the boundaries of the discipline as they treated thousands of casualties in evacuation hospitals and aboard hospital ships” (p.6).

Hi everyone!

I am PMHNP track, started the program this past spring, and took a summer class. I am currently working at Tewksbury State Hospital, where I have been since 2019. I have three beautiful daughters: the first one started kindergarten last week, a preschooler, and a two-year-old. I am passionate about helping others, especially those marginalized by society.

For me, the historical event is the return of soldiers after World War 11 with casualties in mental illness that highlighted psychiatric problems prevalent in society, contributing to new treatments such as electroshock therapy, which increased the need for trained nurses specializing in knowledge-based practice. I believe the need for specialized trained psychiatric nurses since World War 11 positively influenced advanced education in psychiatry. This public awareness is credited for developing specialty nursing through opening nursing schools with the first master’s program at Rutgers University in New Jersey by Professor Hildegarde, providing opportunities to nurses’ leadership.

I am currently working as a nursing supervisor in a Rehab Facility/ Assisted Living facility in Maryland, where I have been for seven years. I am looking forward to finishing my MSN in May 2022 then continued the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program in Fall . I enjoyed mentoring new nurses on the unit also volunteered in the community health outreach to feed and provide free health promotion services in the shelter homes through the church.

Based on the historical forces that influenced the advanced practice nursing role, I discovered that Dr. William Mayo was among the first physicians to recognize and train anesthetists even when nurses were challenged as to why they have no right to administer anesthesia during childbirth. Furthermore, it was interesting to know that during World War I the need for pain management and opportunities to assist wounded soldiers led to the formation of the American Association of Nurse anesthetists which later expanded to the use of anesthesia during the Korean and Vietnam wars (Tracy& O’ Grady 2019).

I felt that the use of anesthesia has positively influenced today’s role of the advanced practice nurse in the sense that the nurse anesthetist plays a pivotal role in future care. Nurses are at the forefront of providing preventative care services to the public, they are engaged in continuous education to remain abreast of any technological development in the field (Tracy & ‘O Grady 2019). The Advanced practice nurse provides a full range of anesthesia during and after surgery, performed the assessment, ordered the diagnostic test, and performing care for patients and their families. They followed established education standards to provide safe cost-effective patient-centered care (Tracy & O’Grady 2019).
