Faculty feedback/comments: Class of 2023 Online Orientation Reflective Practice Assignment Overview Welcome to your Physician Assistant (PA) training. We fully recognize the years of effort it has taken you to get to this point, and we are excited to have you as our future colleagues. As you move through these 27 months of training, it is vital to recognize this is more than passing exams and graduating. This is about becoming a safe, competent provider, an effective health care team member, one who upholds the integrity of the PA profession, and one who will be a steward of health care, public safety, and wellness for their community. Instructions 1. Watch the following required videos: a. Why Does Professionalism Matter?, Part I b. Why Does Professionalism Matter?, Part II c. Being a Professional d. Social Media Professionalism in the Medical Community 2. Consider watching the following optional video: a. Millennials in Medicine: Doctors of the Future 3. Read the following article: a. Reflective Practice in Health Care and How to Reflect Effectively 4. Read the Pacific University School of Physician Assistant Studies Professional Performance Standards located on the Didactic Phase Moodle page under Policies, Procedures and Standards. 5. Answer the following questions with: a. responses that are at the graduate student level, b. display a thoughtful, critical analysis with appreciation for the School and the PA profession expectations, c. in-depth personal self-reflection with development of a detailed plan when prompted i. ensure the plans are detailed plans rather than statements of intention, d. utilization of talking points and/or quotes from the above required viewing and/or reading, i. ensure references are clearly noted in your answer with quotation marks around the title of the video or article. 6. Prior to submitting the assignment, review the Online Orientation Reflective Practice Assignment Grading Rubric to ensure all required components have been fulfilled. 8. Once completed, save the assignment as a PDF file titled “Last name First name Reflective Practice Assignment graduation year” (example: McLellan Alison Reflective Practice Assignment 2023) and upload it to the Moodle assignment page no later than Friday, May 14th, at 5:00pm. Assignment Questions 1. It is important to be thinking about where you need to end up at the conclusion of your PA training. Employers require reference forms be completed for PA applicants. The School will be responsible for completing these forms on your behalf. Assuming you have the necessary medical knowledge following your training, the majority of employers ask specific questions regarding professionalism attributes, including an applicant’s: a.) Relationships and responsiveness i. How does this provider interact with patients/families? ii. How does this provider treat support staff, peers, superiors? b.) Communication – is it clear, effective, respectful, professional? c.) Listening skills d.) Ethical Conduct – does this provider demonstrate respect and integrity? e.) Professional attitude and sense of responsibility f.) Documentation – is it timely? g.) Leadership skills — How does this provider function in a small team environment? h.) Approach to handling stress or frustration i.) Ability to handle their workload • What on the list above surprises you? If nothing surprises you, why? • What above will be your biggest challenge, why, and what is your plan to address this challenge? • Knowing that faculty will need to be able to speak to the above attributes, what is your plan to ensure your actions allow faculty to complete these forms with positive remarks? • Additionally, what is your plan to ensure faculty know you well enough to be able to answer these questions on your behalf? o Include plans for both distance/online and on-campus portions of your training. • What is your plan to foster networking and mentorships with faculty, guest lecturers, and clinical preceptors? 2. The School views PA students as future clinicians and colleagues. One area that we see some students struggle is with attention to details, which are abundant throughout PA training. These details include deadlines, coursework instructions, immunization information, etc. As a future PA, missed details are a patient safety issue and concern. • How have you handled balancing large amounts of various details in the past? • Physician Assistant Questionnaire
What is your plan to make sure that details are not missed during your PA training and beyond? 3. We know you have heard some version of the phrase “PA School is like drinking from a fire hydrant” in regards to the amount of information that students must master in 27 short months. Even though you have successfully completed your undergraduate career to get to this point, this significantly increased level of rigor that is experienced during PA training can sometimes bring about novel challenges that students did not anticipate ever being an issue for them. • How have you handled balancing your academic requirements with personal obligations in the past? • What is your plan if you find you yourself struggling academically, professionally, socially, with personal obligations, relationships, mental, or physical health during your PA training and beyond? 4. If you find yourself having difficulties upholding the Professional Performance Standards (e.g., communication, deadlines, etc.) and are required to speak to faculty regarding these issues, what is your plan to have a positive interaction and maintain a big picture of your professional goals? 5. Some students have challenges transitioning from their prior experiences in a competitive academic environment to the School’s focus that does not have students competing against each other, does not have letter grades, and does not have a ranking system. The School is dedicated to fostering student collaboration to prepare graduates for team-based practice in medicine. • Knowing this about the School, what is your plan to maintain a non-competitive focus to your PA training and to support your classmates who are struggling? • How do you plan to connect with classmates in this first semester knowing you’ll be participating in some amount of hybrid distance/online learning? 6. Communities view PAs as community leaders. • What does it mean to you to be a leader? • How does it make you feel that your community will view you as a leader? • How do you see yourself as a leader as a PA student in the didactic phase? • How do you see yourself as a leader as a PA student in the clinical phase? • How do you see yourself as a leader as a practicing PA? 7. In reviewing the School’s policies on the Didactic Phase page in Moodle, you will note examples of unapproved absences include: weddings, graduations, anniversaries, personal days, etc. • What is your plan to prepare your friends and family that you will likely be missing these events during the next 27 months? • What is your plan to keep your training your top priority knowing you might miss these types of events throughout your PA training? 8.
