Racial Profiling and Discrimination Against Muslims at Airports Discussion
Racial Profiling and Discrimination Against Muslims at Airports Discussion
Description
The assignments in this course are aimed at building your knowledge toolkit so that you could conduct rigorous survey research on your own. Since the time constraints of our class do not allow for us to actually carry out a full survey research project, we will practice putting together all the steps into a paper that begins to investigate a major social problem.
This first homework assignment is intended to ensure that you are on the right track to create your survey (due in Week 7) and write up a final paper (due during Finals Week) where you will discuss your research topic, conduct a brief literature review, analyze your preliminary survey results, and discuss your findings.
For this assignment, please address the following:
- Select a social problem you want to investigate (check out this if you need ideas).
- Describe the social problem and which aspect of the problem you are interested in investigating. Be specific (i.e., don’t say gender inequality, that is too broad. Instead, describe a specific type or context of gender equality, like gender inequality in the workplace)
- State a specific research question and explain why survey methods are well suited to help you answer this question. (You can have more than one research question if you’d like
- At first glance, stating a research question may seem like a simple task. However, you need to really think about what research questions you can answer using survey research methods in particular.
- Be sure that your research question is not so broad that a project designed to understand it would take a lifetime to complete. At the same time, you don’t want a research question that is so specific that finding information related to your project will be difficult. Writing a research question that falls between these two extremes is difficult and takes practice and this assignment is intended to help you practice this skill.
- What is your dependent variable (the outcome you want to explain)? Provide a few ideas of how you might measure this with survey questions.
- What are 2-3 main independent variables (factors that you think might cause variations in your dependent variable)? Provide a few ideas of how you might measure this with survey questions.
- What population would you study?
This assignment should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, 1” margins, 12-point font. You are not required to use additional scholarly resources for this assignment, however, if you do, please cite them within the text and in a reference section at the end. This assignment is not a formal paper, and therefore you don’t need an introduction and conclusion. You are welcome to write it with paragraphs that flow from one to the next or in bullet point format.

Welcome to class
Hello class and welcome to the class and I will be your instructor for this course. This is a -week course and requires a lot of time commitment, organization, and a high level of dedication. Please use the class syllabus to guide you through all the assignments required for the course. I have also attached the classroom policies to this announcement to know your expectations for this course. Please review this document carefully and ask me any questions if you do. You could email me at any time or send me a message via the “message” icon in halo if you need to contact me. I check my email regularly, so you should get a response within 24 hours. If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to
I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.
Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.
If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.
Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
Hi Class,
Please read through the following information on writing a Discussion question response and participation posts.

In this assignment you will fine tune your research question(s) and variables by figuring out how to
measure (operationalize) your variables using survey questions. You will create a total of 10 survey
questions. While you will create this survey using SurveyMonkey (see below), the assignment you
upload to Canvas should be in either Word or PDF format. This will allow me to provide feedback on
your question construction, which you can incorporate before sending the survey out to at least 10
respondents of your choice.
Section I
State your research question(s).
State your dependent variable and at least 3 independent variables.
o Conceptualize and operationalize each variable.
Section II
Design a survey questionnaire with at least ten questions.
o
Remember, each question should be designed in such a way that it helps you investigate
the connection between your dependent and independent variables
o
You will eventually administer the survey to people using this online format (but for
grading and feedback purposes please upload to Canvas in a document).
Creating a survey in Survey Monkey:
o
Sign up for a free, basic account with Survey Monkey http://www.surveymonkey.com/.
o
Once you log into your account, click on the top right-hand button Create Survey.o Select the Start from Scratch option and create a survey title.
- Your survey:
o
Should include clear instructions for respondents. To fill in the instructions, add a Title
Page (see image below)
o
Should have at least 10 questions total.
▪
Up to 4 of these can be demographic questions. Examples of demographic
questions include race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexuality, political affiliation, age,
year of birth, relationship status (marital status), number of children, religion, etc.
▪
At least 6 questions should measure attitudes, opinions, or behaviors (as
related to your dependent variable).
- At least 1 of these six should be an open-ended question. Notes about survey question design in SurveyMonkey
All questions should be “multiple choice” except your one open-ended question.
When you start typing a question into the online form, the site will suggest questions that match
key terms (see image below). You can select a question in the SurveyMonkey question bank if it
suits your needs.
Sometimes I think it is easiest to use the preset questions and then just edit the question and/or
answer choices to best fit what you want (this saves some formatting time).
o
To edit a preset question, first add it to your survey. Then, hover over the question and a
series of options will appear, including “edit”o Once you click “edit” you can change the text of both the question and the answer choices
- Be sure you have a total of ten questions on your survey.
Some of the things I will be looking at when it comes to your survey questionnaire:
Are there clear instructions for respondents to follow?
Does the question contain spelling or grammatical errors?
Is the question clear and precise?
Is the question free of bias, which encourages a particular response?
Does the question contain double-barrel statements, which really contain two questions? For
For example, how frequently and how many minutes do you exercise per day?
If the question is close-ended does the student provide a “Prefer Not to Answer/Unsure” option so
that there is an answer choice to fit everyone?
Does the ordering of questionnaire items make sense with similar questions clustered together?
You will eventually send this survey to at least 10 people to fill out, but please wait to do so until I
grade this assignment (in case you need to make any edits based on my feedback).
combine with Survey Monkey creat 10 questions and answer.
Following the terrorist events on September 11, 2001 (9/11), Muslim Americans have faced prejudice, discrimination, and bigotry in a number of instances. While all of the 9/11 hijackers were recognized as Muslims, the aftermath resulted in innocent and completely blameless Muslim Americans being caught up in biased discriminatory profiling instances at airports. Muslim Americans have been blamed collectively of the 9/11 attacks, which were orchestrated by people who were devout Muslims; relatively few of whom fit that description. Since 9/11, while the country has mourned the loss of so many Americans, they have been joined by the thoughts and prayers of the vast majority of Muslim Americans, who have suffered just as much, if not more, than the rest of the country. Despite the fact that Muslims died in the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, the Muslim American community has been collectively branded as a co-conspirator. Our study investigates the views of Houston’s Muslim American community on support for racial profiling at airports following 9/11. Surveys were given out at local mosques throughout the city to collect data. Surprisingly, the majority of Muslim Americans we polled supported racial profiling at airports.
