Week 2 Assignment: Nursing Informatics Pioneers NURS 8210

The term “pioneers” of nursing informatics in America refers to those who were the first to use, create, and adopt technology in nursing practice. These people are the trailblazers, pioneers, and innovators in the field of nursing informatics. The purpose of this essay is to compare two pioneers of nursing informatics, Patricia Abbott and Virginia Saba. The paper will pay particular attention to their professional accomplishments and how their involvement with nursing informatics affected nursing practice.
Professional Achievements of Each Person
Dr. Patricia Abbott received her nursing education at the University of Maryland.
She then became interested in nursing informatics and was one of the first nurse practitioners to use data-mining techniques in nursing practice (Shortliffe, 2004). Dr. Patricia Abbott did research on the various long-term care databases to identify the factors that affect patient outcomes. She also included the patient safety component to her earlier research (Shortliffe, 2004). American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) (2021) claims that Dr. Patricia Abbott made a significant contribution to the development of engaging informatics material in numerous projects funded by the AHRQ and the Health Resources and Services Administration. She was a trailblazer in the field of nursing informatics education and assisted in educating both academics and practitioners. Additionally, Dr. Patricia fought for the development of the ANA Standards of Practice for Nursing Informatics and has represented the United States in the International Medical Informatics Association’s Nursing Special Interest Group (IMIA).

Dr. Virginia Saba is regarded as a pioneer of information technology in nursing both domestically and internationally. For more than 40 years, she has been at the forefront of nursing informatics.
AMIA (2021) claims that Dr. Saba was a pioneer in academic technology efforts and a supporter of the expansion of healthcare IT systems like the Clinical Care Classification (CCC) System. Dr. Saba promoted technology in nursing practice and gave national leadership throughout her nursing career. She brought nursing technology into nursing programs and facilities while working in academics (AMIA, 2021). She also worked on building the CCC System, a national nursing standard, with federal funding. Dr. Saba founded Sabacare Inc. and the CCC System, where she currently holds the positions of president and CEO. The company wants to integrate the CCC system with electronic medical record-keeping programs.
What Impact Their Work Has Had on Nursing Practice
The efforts of Dr. Abbott have impacted nursing practice by assisting nurses in giving patients better care, which leads to better health outcomes. She investigated the numerous long-term care datasets to identify the factors that affect patient outcomes (Shortliffe, 2004). In order to improve outcomes, nurses take these aspects into account when planning patient care and putting interventions in place. The contributions of Dr. Abbott have also inspired nurses to give patients safe treatment (Shortliffe, 2004). Thanks to Dr. Saba’s innovations, information technology solutions like the CCC system have increased the effectiveness of patient treatment (AMIA, 2021). The CCC system is crucial for nurses because it gives them a special coding scheme for assessing, recording, and classifying patient care. Her assistance has also facilitated and enhanced nursing recordkeeping, facilitating simple access to patient health information.
How Their Impact Has Changed the Landscape of Nursing Informatics
The efforts of Dr. Abbott helped to shape nursing informatics by teaching nurse informaticians how to mine databases for data. Informaticians consequently acquire large

data collections and employ them to enhance the provision of healthcare (AMIA, 2021). Her leadership in developing nursing informatics researchers and practitioners has contributed to an increase in nurse informaticians, which supports the development of the informatics field. Dr. Saba introduced academic technology programs that allowed nurses the chance to learn about informatics and use technology in nursing practice. These programs helped to shape nursing informatics (AMIA, 2021). The CCC system, which aids in the computerized documentation of nursing plans of care, was also developed with her support. Additionally, the CCC System is accepted as the preferred nomenclature for describing patient care in an electronic health record system.
