Comparison of Ross and Kant’s Ethical Theories

W.D. Ross, a very prominent figure in the 20th-century deontological ethics field who introduced a very special viewpoint called the deontological pluralism. Unlike many other monistic theories that highly prioritize one singular moral principle, Ross’s deontological pluralism recognizes multiple fundamental moral principles, each of which captures a very significant aspect of our moral experience. Central to Ross’s ethical framework is the concept of prima facie duties. These duties, like fidelity, reparation, gratitude, justice, beneficence, and self-improvement, are not absolute but a bit conditional, holding unless they conflict with an equal or stronger duty. In such cases of conflict, one duty becomes a very absolute duty, which Ross defines as the duty that one is ultimately obliged to perform in a very particular situation. This distinction between prima facie and absolute duties allows for some flexibility and a bit of nuance in moral decision-making, accommodating the complex and often conflicting demands of our moral life. Ross’s ethical theory, therefore, offers a pretty rich and multifaceted approach to deontological ethics, balancing the rigidness of absolute duties with the diversity of prima facie duties (Saylor Academy).

Immanuel Kant, a very central figure in moral philosophy, proposed a deontological ethical theory that places the emphasis on duty and moral law. At the heart of Kant’s ethical theory is the Categorical Imperative, a principle that very much requires us to act only according to those maxims that we could will to become a very universal law! This imperative is very categorical because it is very unconditional and applies universally, regardless of one’s desires or personal circumstances. Kant’s concept of duty is quite closely tied to this imperative. For Kant, a morally right action is one performed out of a sense of duty and respect for the moral law, not because of what it can achieve. Furthermore, Kant introduced the concept of goodwill, which he considered the only thing that is pretty good without any qualification. A goodwill is really good in itself and not because of what it produces or achieves. It is the will to do one’s duty for the sake of duty itself, guided maybe by the Categorical Imperative. Thus, Kant’s ethical theory presents a robust framework for moral decision-making, grounded in duty, moral law, and goodwill (Westacott).

Comparison

When comparing and contrasting the ethical theories of W.D. Ross and Immanuel Kant, some key differences and similarities emerge. Both Ross and Kant advocate for deontological ethics, which a very much emphasizes duty as the basis for moral action. However, while Kant’s theory is monistic, focusing on a single moral principle encapsulated in the Categorical Imperative, Ross’s theory is pluralistic, recognizing multiple prima facie duties that capture various aspects of our moral experience. The concept of duty in both theories also differs significantly. For Kant, duty is absolute and derived from the Categorical Imperative. An action is morally right if it can be willed as a universal law, regardless of its consequences. On the other hand, Ross’s concept of prima facie duties is more flexible. These duties are quite conditional and can either be overridden by more pressing duties in a given situation. Thus, Ross’s theory allows for a more nuanced approach to moral decision-making, accommodating the complexity of real-world ethical dilemmas (“Chapter 7: Deontological Ethics (Kant and Ross) – Lucid Philosophy”).

Despite these differences, both Ross and Kant view the role of duty as very central to ethical decisions. For Kant, moral worth is determined by the motive of duty, while for Ross, the right action is guided by a balance of duties. Thus, while their theories diverge in significant ways, both philosophers really underscore the importance of duty in guiding moral action. This comparison highlights the richness and diversity of deontological ethics, offering various perspectives on how we ought to maybe navigate our moral lives.

In the end, both W.D. Ross and Immanuel Kant have made quite significant contributions to deontological ethics, athough with distinct approaches. Ross’s deontological pluralism recognizes multiple prima facie duties, offering a nuanced and flexible approach to moral decision-making. In contrast, Kant’s monistic deontology, anchored in the Categorical Imperative, provides a universal and absolute framework for ethical conduct. Despite their differences, both philosophers underscore the importance of duty in ethical decisions.

Gender Roles

Defining gender roles for men and women is essential as they differ in their physical and mental capabilities. Compared to women, men are stronger and should, therefore, carry out all the hard work at home.

  1. In the family, men should be involved in activities such as farming to provide for the family. At the same time, women should focus on domestic chores such as cooking, taking care of children, and washing dishes (Bailey and Cooke, 1998, p.104).
  2. Being the heads of their families, men should take an active role in disciplining their children when they are in the wrong (Sarkisian and Gerstel, 2004, p.440). Discipline should not only involve beating up the kids but also talking to them as to charge their bad conduct (Whatmore, 1991, p.73). Women, on the other hand, should ensure that the children are clean and well dressed.
  3. Men should also give guidance and counseling to their children to prevent them from going astray. (Cheung and Halpern, 2010, p.182). Women, on the other hand, should ensure that the servants in the house are familiar with the operations of the house. Besides, they should ensure that family resources are well protected.
  4. As the head of the family, a man should strive to protect the family from potential danger (Sarkisian and Gerstel, 2004, p.440). A woman, on the other hand, should focus on making the children happy by taking them to school and feeding them when they are hungry.
  5. As the head of the family, a man should lead discussions regarding the progress of the family and ensure that all members of the family adhere to the set rules (Bailey and Cooke, 1998, p.104). A woman, on the other hand, should focus on seconding the man and constantly reminding other members about the set guidelines.

Families should not define gender roles as both men and women are equal. Both the man and the woman should take an active part in preparing a meal for the family and serving their children.

  1. A man and a woman in the family should ensure that children are cleaned and dressed in clean clothes as it is their responsibility to take care of their children (Ely and Meyerson, 2000, p.590).
  2. Due to the hard economic times, both men and women should take an active role in providing for the family (Lewis, 2007, p.178). They should share bills to ensure that one party is not disadvantaged.
  3. Both parents play an active role in the academic performance of their children. It is, therefore, the role of both the man and woman to guide their children while doing their homework to make it possible for the children to have higher grades and test scores (Whatmore, 1991, p.73).
  4. To bring up responsible members of society, both the man and woman should guide their children on the accepted code of behavior in the community (Bengtson, 2001, p.13). They should also discipline the children when they go against the set guidelines.

In any functioning democracy, interest groups play a vital role as they share a common belief on a particular issue. They step in for the people as political personnel cannot deliver sufficient representation aimed at the diverse interests of the public in a democratic country. This is because the main role of political parties is combining interests into an articulate political body capable of governing the country.

The quality of government is improved by the interest groups. Being the people on the ground who interact directly with the general public enables them to consult with the people and understand their problems thus addressing them to the government enabling a rational decision making. The efficiency of the government is improved by increasing the value of the process of making decisions (Martini, 2012). The information and advice provided by interest groups   advances the excellence of government strategies and legislation also.

Special interest groups supplements the work of the opposition party through scrutiny of the government by exposing some important information that the government would have wanted to remain a secret. This therefore improves the quality of accountability of the government towards its citizens.

Anxieties and important concerns are able to reach the political group. Through this social development is facilitated thus avoiding social inactivity. For instance, providing a conducive environment to conduct business thus enabling people to meet their basic human needs and also creating favorable conditions for all individuals to reach their maximum potential.

Interest groups well represent the people by facilitating public engagement which offers a podium for people to be associated with the political and social community. Advancement of grassroots movements which begin at the local levels magnifies the voices of the people through appropriate organization allowing them to take part in ways which would otherwise be impossible (Etzioni, 1985). For example, they allow the people to aggressively work on an issue in an effort to impact the public policy.

In conclusion, majority of the people do not have the political knowhow on government affairs and bank on these interest groups to represent them. These groups have tremendous resources which can impact on the decisions of the government for the good of the general public. For instance they can use their financial powers to hire petitioners to represent the interests of the people who would otherwise be disadvantaged due to lack of funds and powerful representation.

For this assignment, I have decided to focus on subcultures, particularly the general prison culture. In the movie, Shawshank Redemption, subculture, which refers to a group of individuals sharing similar values, beliefs, and norms, is depicted. Prison subculture, on the other hand, means prisoner code, which is the process of realizing each group’s principles and beliefs without disobeying them whether you believe in them or not. Going against a specific organization in jail can lead to the death of the victim. Prison subculture is characterized by not informing fellow prisoners, mistrusting staff, and being loyal.

The general prison culture is brought up in the movie Shawshank Redemption. Public prison culture is divided into two subcultures, which are guard subcultures and inmate subcultures. As for the guard subcultures, there exist different types of guards in jails (Einat & Einat, 2000). To begin with is the rule enforcer who is a reasonably strict guard whose focus is primarily on ensuring control. These guards are not concerned about negotiating with the convicts, instead, they are fascinated by making their power felt by the inmates. Secondly is the individuals’ worker type of guard who is often older, supplementary experienced and relies on their verbal skills and mental abilities instead of physical force (Schaefer, 2018). Finally is the loner type of guard who firmly implements the rules and is always on guard to prove their skills to other guards. For example in the movie, Warden Samuel Norton establishes his real nature as that of a disciplinarian. He conspires to have Tommy Williams slaughtered to prevent Andy from fleeing from prison (McIntosh, 2019).

Inmate subculture is the norms, principles, ethics, ideas, and language adopted by a specific group of inmates in prison. It is best described by the deprivation model, which states that convict subculture is apparent through the pains of detention. It is also defined by the importation model that says that the subculture is evident because the convicts are imitating the outside world (Schaefer, 2018). In both convict subculture models, behavior code, a power ladder, financial system for unlawful possessions and service supplies are available. For instance, in the movie, Andy is a good example as he assists the guards and the Warden with their levies and handles their money (McIntosh, 2019).

In prison, acts of violence and rape are very predominant. Although they are illegal, the wardens and guards allow them to happen to the weak inmates who lack protection from gang members. Andy realized that hope is dangerous. This made him engage in commercial activities with the warden in exchange for protection from other inmates.

Analysis

  1. Dominant culture refers to the recognized language, faith, conduct, morals, rites, and social customs. These qualities are frequently the standard for society as a whole (Oyserman, 2016). The dominant culture is typical but not always in the majority and accomplishes its supremacy by regulating social organizations such as communication, academic organizations, and business. In the film, the aspect of dominant culture is brought up. This is through Andy Dufresne, a banker who is mistakenly sentenced for slaying his wife and her lover (McIntosh, 2019). In an attempt to remain unnoticeable and find his prison personality, he helps Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding, a supplier, and Brooks Hatlen.
  2. Socialization refers to the continual process of receiving and distributing standards, customs, and principles, thereby providing a person with the abilities and conducts essential for taking part in societal activities. It is how social and cultural continuousness is achieved. In the film, socialization is achieved when Andy says to Red, “You know the funny thing is, on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook” (McIntosh, 2019). Additionally, it is also portrayed when the Warden states that “Rule number one: no blasphemy. I will not have the Lord’s name taken in vain in my prison.” He denies the inmates their freedom of speech on the basis that he is against such “ugly words.”
  3. Values are principles or standards of behavior or an individual’s judgment of what is essential in life. Values are depicted in the film by showing the audience how conditions are really like in prison. For instance, the cases of rape and sodomy that occur in the movie show what some people really care about and how far they can go to achieve it. For example, Andy agrees to handle money for the guards and Warden just to be protected from the other inmates.
  4. Language is the method in which human beings communicate with each other, either in written or spoken words in a structured and conventional way. In the movie, language is portrayed by describing the prison as a horrible place to live disconnected from the outside world.
  5. Culture shock is the feeling of confusion experienced by an individual when exposed to a different culture and way of life. In the film, it is brought up when Earl Jelks, an Irish black man, finds himself as the only black man in prison amid white men.

“Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his characteristics behavior and thought” (Allport, 1961, p. 28).

Both definitions emphasize the uniqueness of the individual and consequently adopt an idiographic view.

We must also consider the influence and interaction of nature (biology, genetics, etc.) and nurture (the environment, upbringing) with respect to personality development.

Trait theories of personality imply personality is biologically based, whereas state theories such as Bandura’s (1977) Social Learning Theory emphasize the role of nurture and environmental influence.

Sigmund Freud’s psychodynamic theory of personality assumes there is an interaction between nature (innate instincts) and nurture (parental influences).

Domestic violence often occurs when the abuser believes that they are entitled to it, or that it is acceptable, justified, or unlikely to be reported. It may produce an intergenerational cycle of violence in children and other family members, who may feel that such violence is acceptable or condoned. With this newly acquired information, healthcare professionals will be able to adjust their strategies and make sure that the care they give to their Asian American patients is in line with their cultural beliefs, values, and practices, which will eventually lead to better health outcomes and patient satisfaction.
