How Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle Viewed the Soul

Description

I want to discuss the difference in theories between the 3 philosophers on what they thought “ the soul” was. Needs to be in Chicago style format

Plato was the first person in the history of philosophy to believe that the soul was both the source of life and the mind.[1] In Plato’s dialogues, we find the soul playing many disparate roles. Among other things, Plato believes that the soul is what gives life to the body (which was articulated most of all in the Laws and Phaedrus) in terms of self-motion: to be alive is to be capable of moving yourself; the soul is a self-mover. He also thinks that the soul is the bearer of moral properties (i.e., when I am virtuous, it is my soul that is virtuous as opposed to, say, my body). The soul is also the mind: it is that which thinks in us.

We see this casual oscillation between different roles of the soul in many dialogues. First of all, in the Republic:

Is there any function of the soul that you could not accomplish with anything else, such as taking care of something (epimeleisthai), ruling, and deliberating, and other such things? Could we correctly assign these things to anything besides the soul, and say that they are characteristic (idia) of it?

No, to nothing else.

What about living? Will we deny that this is a function of the soul?

That absolutely is.[2]

The Phaedo most famously caused problems to scholars who were trying to make sense of this aspect of Plato’s theory of the soul.

Accordingly, the Phaedo presents a real challenge to commentators through the way that Plato oscillates between different conceptions of the soul.

In the cyclical and Form-of-life arguments, for instance, the soul is presented as something connected with life, where, in particular in the final argument, this connection is spelled out concretely by means of the soul’s conceptual connection with life. This connection is further developed in the Phaedrus and Laws where the definition of soul is given as self-motion. Rocks, for instance, do not move unless something else moves them; inanimate, unliving objects are always said to behave this way. In contrast, living things are capable of moving themselves. Plato uses this observation to illustrate his famous doctrine that the soul is a self-mover: life is self-motion, and the soul brings life to a body by moving it.

Meanwhile, in the recollection and affinity arguments, the connection with life is not explicated or used at all. These two arguments present the soul as a knower (i.e., a mind). This is most clear in the affinity argument, where the soul is said to be immortal in virtue of its affinity with the Forms that we observe in acts of cognition.

It is not at all clear how these two roles of the soul are related to each other. Sarah Broadie famously complained that “readers of the Phaedo sometimes take Plato to task for confusing soul as mind or that which thinks, with soul as that which animates the body.”[3] Others included II.M. Crombie and Dorothea Frede.[4]

More-recent scholarship has overturned this accusation, arguing that part of the novelty of Plato’s theory of the soul is that it was the first to unite the different features and powers of the soul that became commonplace in later ancient and medieval philosophy.[1] For Plato, the soul moves things by means of its thoughts, as one scholar puts it, and accordingly, the soul is both a mover (i.e., the principle of life, where life is conceived of as self-motion) and a thinker.

  1. Choose the most important points, and summarize so that during your presentation

the audience can have a good idea of what the original text is about

This article uses intersectionality to analyze the impact of the child welfare policy on the livelihood of people of colour and their overrepresentation. Most research studies have indicated that welfare eligibility among the black community has impacted the increase of poverty among people of colour.

  1. Comment on how the article impacted the student them personally and emotionally

The family regulation system that was put in place to protect and govern the growth and development of children has slowly turned against them and, as a result, caused more harm than good to its people. The family regulation system investigates, accuses, and blames parents misappropriately, thus leading to families’ separation and break up. Over the years, the system, through research studies, has proven to criminalize minority groups, especially the black community. Dorothy E. Roberts, in Shattered Bonds, describes the system as a failure to help people experiencing poverty, especially the black community, but rather a system that destroys poor black families and denies children the privilege of living with their parents.

  1. Does the article support or refute the current system?

Over the years, the United child welfare system has deliberately enforced and discriminated against laws that profligate white supremacy in America. According to the number of cases reported in most states in America, most black families have been separated from their families, promoting poverty, trauma among children, and emotional, physical, and mental health-related issues.

Vivek Sankaran, an advocate for children’s human rights, argues that the system can be reverted and apply better skills to bring sanity to families (Sankaran et al., 2019). He advocates for change with the knowledge that it doesn’t happen overnight. Still, implementing better strategies will help administer better growth and development of children and families at large.

  1. What changes would you suggest need to made in order to ensure social justice in

this situation

A recommendation to the family regulation system would be to implement laws and regulations guided by the constitution on measures to be undertaken before separating parents and children. Evaluating the capability of parents to take care of their children should be an integrated study of many factors relating to the school, community, and the law. Another strategy would be to ensure the separation should provide options for the children to be accommodated in places they feel comfortable other than being taken to strange foster care homes.

Separation from loved ones can impact and challenge the development of children, thus the need to implement better transition and separation processes.

Part A

  1. Three things I learned
  2. The essay “The Value of Acceptance in Direct Social Work Practice.” discusses the benefits of empathy and nonjudgment in client interactions. Since it discusses acceptance, this social work article is titled “The Value of Acceptance in Direct Social Work Practice”(Berlin, 2005). This principle may be implemented by creating a welcoming, secure environment where people can freely communicate and express themselves.
  3. The author of “Strengths-Based Social Work Assessment” emphasizes recognizing and using a client’s unique qualities rather than focusing on their problems (Graybeal, 2001). This contrasts with the author’s focus on client issues. My professional practice may implement strengths-based evaluations to empower clients and harness their advantages.
  4. The article “The Structure of Empathy” discusses empathy in social work. This academic work has improved my grasp of client-emotional connection approaches (Johnson et al., 1983). One might adopt this method by improving their customer empathy and emotional support.
  5. The difference in duration between Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2 and Cyclothymic Disorders
    • A person has Bipolar I Disorder if they have manic periods for at least one week and depressed episodes for at least two weeks afterward. After manic episodes, depressed phases must occur.
    • Bipolar II Disorder is diagnosed when a person has four-day low moods and two-week depressed incidents. To be diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, both signs must be present (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015).
  • At least two years of hypomanic and depressed symptoms characterize Cyclothymic Disorder (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015). These symptoms help doctors diagnose the cyclothymic disorder. This condition’s suggested treatment takes at least two years.
  1. Main behaviors associated with Bipolar1, 2, and Cyclothymic Disorders
  • Depressive episodes in Bipolar I Disorder are defined by melancholy, exhaustion, and low energy. It differs from bipolar II. Manic episodes are characterized by elevated mood, activity, and impulsivity(SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015).
  • Bipolar II Disorder includes hypomanic and depressed periods and less manic symptoms. This separates it from other disorders.
  • A persistent mental illness, the cyclothymic disorder causes hypomanic and depressed episodes. The condition is a cyclothymic syndrome. Understand that these periods are less intense than those in patients with entire manic or depressed states. People in whole manic or depressed states have these symptoms (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015). The patient is emotionally labile throughout this condition.
  1. How this reading enhanced my understanding of social work within mental health
  • This reading increased my comprehension by emphasizing acceptance, empathy, and strengths-based assessments and treatment strategies. This event has challenged my perspective by emphasizing the importance of cultural variations in depression.
  1. Interventions for Bipolar disorders
  • Medication management is necessary to control mood swings.
  • Psychotherapy, especially CBT, and psychoeducation are common treatments (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015).
  • Making lifestyle changes, such as managing stress well and staying awake throughout the week.
  • Supportive therapies help clients manage their daily lives and relationships throughout mood episodes.

PART B

  1. Personal Encounter with depression

From my experience with depression and my subjective view, people in my cultural setting commonly describe feeling sad as having a “burdened heart” or being engulfed by a “veil of melancholy.” Fatigue, appetite loss, and sleep problems are common depression symptoms. My culture saw melancholy episodes as a sign of fragility; thus, people had to control their depression. Concerns about social judgment and mental health stigma may hinder people from sharing their depression with family, neighbors, coworkers, or religious communities.

  1. LGBT suicide and depression

LGBT depression and suicide are thought to be linked to discrimination, marginalization, and public censure. The LGBT community’s diverse cultural traits and societal viewpoints must be considered while diagnosing and treating them. Respectful approaches to disclosure, discrimination, and other LGBT concerns are essential for success—the need to address LGBT mental health issues.

Part C

  1. Significant symptoms associated with Depressive Disorders.
  • A person has persistent sadness or a bad mood.
  • Depression sometimes causes anhedonia, the loss of pleasure from formerly rewarding activities.
  • Changes in appetite or weight.
  • Sleep problems, including insomnia or hypersomnia, may occur.
  • Individuals often experience weariness or low energy.
  • The person feels low self-esteem or excessive guilt.
  • Individuals often struggle to focus or make decisions.
  • The person obsesses about death or self-harm.
  1. List three things that you have learned from this reading.
  1. The accumulation of information on the diagnostic criteria and subtypes of depressive disorders has given me the tools to successfully identify and evaluate clients who show these diseases.
  2. The reading highlighted the importance of adopting a holistic approach to treatment, including medication, psychotherapy, and social support (Taraji P. Henson on living with depression and anxiety | Body stories | SELF, 2019). I may implement this strategy by advocating for the incorporation of complete treatment plans for the people I work with.
  3. It is of the utmost significance to have a solid understanding of the cultural and personal variances in the experience and manifestation of depression (Taraji P. Henson on living with depression and anxiety | Body stories | SELF, 2019). It is possible to put this knowledge into practice by tailoring treatments to meet particular customers’ specific requirements and expectations
  4. Primary Interventions for Depressive Disorders
  • Psychotherapy, including CBT and IPT, may help.
  • Depression therapy using antidepressants and medication control.
  • Lifestyle changes, including food and exercise.
  • Support group and social network participation to help individuals in need.
  • Techniques for stress reduction and mental and physical relaxation
  1. What was difficult for me to understand?
  • This reading presented no challenges for me in comprehending any particular component.
  1. Application of this reading in my current position.
  • This reading will improve my capacity to identify and help depressed people in my career. Through scientifically-based and culturally appropriate therapy, I can help depressed people.

Introduction

Due to the rise in active shooter incidents, occupational security has become a new meaning in the modern world. Organizations must set up procedures and get ready to counter such threats effectively. Even while only some companies have elaborate procedures in place, it is crucial to know what needs to be done to get ready in case of an active shooter(Griebe et al., 2023).

Protocols and Preparations in the Workplace

In places of work where the risk of an active shooter is higher, it is essential to create a thorough procedure. Many groups have used “Run, Hide, Fight” as a standard response plan. This method tells workers to try to escape danger first, then hide if they cannot, and only then fight back against the shooter. Organizations should hold regular drills to help employees get used to this routine and how the work environment is set up. This will make them better prepared(Griebe et al., 2023).

Additionally, businesses must establish a reliable communication infrastructure that permits quick news transfer in an emergency. This can include designated persons informing staff of information, communication systems, and SMS alerts. Building a safe room with first aid supplies and communication tools can provide workers with a secure area to seek refuge in addition to communicating(Wade, 2020). A crucial component of preparation is access restriction. Controlling the entrances to the workplace can discourage possible shooters and boost staff security. Metal detectors, security guards, and CCTV cameras can all be utilized to monitor and control the entrance to the building.

Role of a nurse in an active shooter scenario

A nurse’s responsibilities in the case of an active shooter involve not just defending themselves but also attending to the basic requirements of their patients and fellow employees. Before anything else, it is essential to keep calm and composure, as panicking could make the situation more serious(Wade, 2020). Nurses should analyze the situation immediately, establish how close the threat is, and choose whether it is best to flee or hide. If evacuation is not an option, nurses should put patients’ safety first by relocating them to a secure area inside the hospital. This may entail barricading entrances, locking doors, and remaining silent to avoid the shooter’s detection. The best protection against danger should be provided to immobile patients.

Nurses should also offer injured people first aid and medical attention if it is safe. Mastering the basics of wound management and bleeding prevention can be very beneficial in these situations. It is crucial to create a line of communication with emergency responders and authorities, and physicians should be prepared to relay information about the situation, the total number of victims, and any serious health concerns. Nursing professionals must also be able to assist one another emotionally(Wade, 2020). An active shooter incident’s tension and anguish may have long-term psychological repercussions. The ability to comfort, reassure, and, if required, aid in evacuating patients with mobility disabilities should be taught to nurses.

Nursing Bullying: Root Causes and Solutions

Sadly, bullying has grown to be a severe problem among nurses. In order to successfully deal with this issue, it is critical to comprehend why bullying occurs so frequently and offer advice to both newly hired nurses who experience bullying and bystanders who observe such behavior.

Reasons for Bullying

Bullying occurs frequently in the nursing field for a variety of reasons. The high-stress levels can bring on colleague tension, demanding workloads, and the need to make crucial decisions. In healthcare settings, hierarchical systems may also encourage a culture in which power dynamics are prevalent(Hartin et al., 2020). Due to jealousy, competition, or personal fears, nurses may bully their coworkers. Additionally, it may be difficult for new nurses to express their feelings or report bullying due to the hierarchical structure of medical facilities. Speaking up can be discouraged for young nurses due to concerns about retaliation, a desire to fit in, or the idea that these individuals should put up with abuse as part of their professional development(Hartin et al., 2020).

Suggestions for New Nurses being bullied by coworkers

Realizing that you are not alone is crucial for new nurses who are being bullied. Asking role models, bosses, or HR staff for advice can be one of the most critical foremost steps. Such circumstances should be reported to the suitable authorities(Johnson & Benham‐Hutchins, 2020). Bullying cases should be documented and kept on file so that evidence may be produced if needed. In order to combat bullying, bystanders are crucial. A nurse colleague has to step in and help the victim if they observe bullying. Addressing the bully directly, reporting the act, or providing the victim with emotional support are all examples of how to do this.

Conclusion

In conclusion, resolving the problem of bullying in nursing and preparing for active shooter situations at work are essential steps in protecting the security and well-being of medical staff members and patients. Healthcare businesses may establish a safer and more inclusive work environment for their staff by implementing protocols, training, and cultivating a culture of support and respect. In turn, nurses must be informed of what to do in these circumstances, whether dealing with an active shooter or speaking out against bullying at work. The promotion of a secure and encouraging healthcare setting eventually calls for teamwork.

Gender and Power

The way individuals are brought up plays an essential role in how individuals understand gender roles. Children, and especially girls, are brought up believing that they are supposed to carry out household chores and take care of children. On the other hand, boys are brought up thinking that they are supposed to provide for their families and protect them from attacks. Therefore, gender is socially constructed and created.

It is hard for most individuals in the contemporary world to understand what it felt like for women not to practice their democratic right of voting long before 1920. Women were denied the right to vote because they were regarded as less intelligent than their male colleagues. As a result, their votes were under the control of men just as children were under the supervision of their parents (Butler 88). Further, early before the 1930s, married women were denied the right to move from place to place on their passports and were required to use their husbands’.

Since medieval times, gender roles have significantly changed. Previously some of the duties that were considered as belonging to men and women, have taken a different turn. For instance, in the past, cooking and other household chores were considered as belonging to women (Erye 10). However, nowadays, men also perform household chores and look after their children in the absence of their mothers.

Traditionally, specific jobs and especially those related to politics and the criminal justice system, were male-dominated. Women were not seen as having the capacity to hold such positions. However, as time went by, there was a drastic increase in jobs related to women, supplemented by a substantial change in economic opportunities for women. Although women possess male-dominated occupations, there still exists a gender pay gap, which is a clear indication of the significant alterations in salaries that continue to exist for jobs related to women compared to roles related with men (Siobhan 68).  Such a difference can be related to overcrowding in certain occupations. For example, if women are extremely concentrated in particular occupations, there will be an oversupply of labor, leading to reduced wages for women.

Unlike before, where women never occupied high positions of power, in the contemporary world, women now run for political offices and become managers in organizations. However, women’s choices play an essential role in why the majority of males still dominate the high positions of power. For instance, women have a higher likelihood of quitting their jobs after child delivery (Butler 93). As a result, most companies are afraid of investing in women, especially when it comes to training due to the fear that they will not utilize their full potential for the company’s greater good. Individuals experience ethnicity, gender, and social status inversely based on their social location. For instance, persons from the same ethnic group have a higher likelihood of experiencing ethnicity inversely grounded in their social structure position.

In conclusion, gender and roles related to gender are socially constructed. Gender roles have changed, and men and vice versa are now performing duties that were previously regarded as women. Women now run for political offices and hold high positions of power in organizations. However, the gender wage gap is still a contentious issue.

Description

Consider Sé Sullivan’s quote: “How did you get your gender? Who gave it to you?” While this quote acts as an individual directive for reflection, Sullivan’s quote allows for us to interrogate the role of the various apparatuses of power–the state, capital, mass media culture, hegemonic cultural and social norms–in shaping not only individual gender expression, but in understanding gender as a whole as a category for difference-making.

Utilizing the material from weeks one through three, answer the question, How are gender, power, and oppression fundamentally interlinked throughout the history of the United States?

Things you will want to touch upon include: what gives the gender binary its power? How are the ways we understand gender and sex fundamentally intertwined with race and colonialism? What is the relationship between medicine/science, the state, and gender regimes? What are the different forms that resistance to these regimes of power might take?

You will be required to utilize at least three course readings (including required readings), and this project must be at least 500 words (not including citations, works cited page, title, and name/date/course code).

While you can use a connection you developed in a weekly reflection paper as a starting point, you must substantially expand upon that connection. You must cite all your sources properly, even if you are paraphrasing in order to succeed at this assignment.
