This article uses intersectionality to analyze the impact of the child welfare policy on the livelihood of people of colour and their overrepresentation. Most research studies have indicated that welfare eligibility among the black community has impacted the increase of poverty among people of colour.
- Comment on how the article impacted the student them personally and emotionally
The family regulation system that was put in place to protect and govern the growth and development of children has slowly turned against them and, as a result, caused more harm than good to its people. The family regulation system investigates, accuses, and blames parents misappropriately, thus leading to families’ separation and break up. Over the years, the system, through research studies, has proven to criminalize minority groups, especially the black community. Dorothy E. Roberts, in Shattered Bonds, describes the system as a failure to help people experiencing poverty, especially the black community, but rather a system that destroys poor black families and denies children the privilege of living with their parents.
- Does the article support or refute the current system?
Over the years, the United child welfare system has deliberately enforced and discriminated against laws that profligate white supremacy in America. According to the number of cases reported in most states in America, most black families have been separated from their families, promoting poverty, trauma among children, and emotional, physical, and mental health-related issues.
Vivek Sankaran, an advocate for children’s human rights, argues that the system can be reverted and apply better skills to bring sanity to families (Sankaran et al., 2019). He advocates for change with the knowledge that it doesn’t happen overnight. Still, implementing better strategies will help administer better growth and development of children and families at large.
- What changes would you suggest need to made in order to ensure social justice in
this situation
A recommendation to the family regulation system would be to implement laws and regulations guided by the constitution on measures to be undertaken before separating parents and children. Evaluating the capability of parents to take care of their children should be an integrated study of many factors relating to the school, community, and the law. Another strategy would be to ensure the separation should provide options for the children to be accommodated in places they feel comfortable other than being taken to strange foster care homes.
Separation from loved ones can impact and challenge the development of children, thus the need to implement better transition and separation processes.
