- Three things I learned
- The essay “The Value of Acceptance in Direct Social Work Practice.” discusses the benefits of empathy and nonjudgment in client interactions. Since it discusses acceptance, this social work article is titled “The Value of Acceptance in Direct Social Work Practice”(Berlin, 2005). This principle may be implemented by creating a welcoming, secure environment where people can freely communicate and express themselves.
- The author of “Strengths-Based Social Work Assessment” emphasizes recognizing and using a client’s unique qualities rather than focusing on their problems (Graybeal, 2001). This contrasts with the author’s focus on client issues. My professional practice may implement strengths-based evaluations to empower clients and harness their advantages.
- The article “The Structure of Empathy” discusses empathy in social work. This academic work has improved my grasp of client-emotional connection approaches (Johnson et al., 1983). One might adopt this method by improving their customer empathy and emotional support.
- The difference in duration between Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2 and Cyclothymic Disorders
- A person has Bipolar I Disorder if they have manic periods for at least one week and depressed episodes for at least two weeks afterward. After manic episodes, depressed phases must occur.
- Bipolar II Disorder is diagnosed when a person has four-day low moods and two-week depressed incidents. To be diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, both signs must be present (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015).
- At least two years of hypomanic and depressed symptoms characterize Cyclothymic Disorder (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015). These symptoms help doctors diagnose the cyclothymic disorder. This condition’s suggested treatment takes at least two years.
- Main behaviors associated with Bipolar1, 2, and Cyclothymic Disorders
- Depressive episodes in Bipolar I Disorder are defined by melancholy, exhaustion, and low energy. It differs from bipolar II. Manic episodes are characterized by elevated mood, activity, and impulsivity(SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015).
- Bipolar II Disorder includes hypomanic and depressed periods and less manic symptoms. This separates it from other disorders.
- A persistent mental illness, the cyclothymic disorder causes hypomanic and depressed episodes. The condition is a cyclothymic syndrome. Understand that these periods are less intense than those in patients with entire manic or depressed states. People in whole manic or depressed states have these symptoms (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015). The patient is emotionally labile throughout this condition.
- How this reading enhanced my understanding of social work within mental health
- This reading increased my comprehension by emphasizing acceptance, empathy, and strengths-based assessments and treatment strategies. This event has challenged my perspective by emphasizing the importance of cultural variations in depression.
- Interventions for Bipolar disorders
- Medication management is necessary to control mood swings.
- Psychotherapy, especially CBT, and psychoeducation are common treatments (SOPHIA F. DZIEGIELEWSKI., 2015).
- Making lifestyle changes, such as managing stress well and staying awake throughout the week.
- Supportive therapies help clients manage their daily lives and relationships throughout mood episodes.
PART B
- Personal Encounter with depression
From my experience with depression and my subjective view, people in my cultural setting commonly describe feeling sad as having a “burdened heart” or being engulfed by a “veil of melancholy.” Fatigue, appetite loss, and sleep problems are common depression symptoms. My culture saw melancholy episodes as a sign of fragility; thus, people had to control their depression. Concerns about social judgment and mental health stigma may hinder people from sharing their depression with family, neighbors, coworkers, or religious communities.
- LGBT suicide and depression
LGBT depression and suicide are thought to be linked to discrimination, marginalization, and public censure. The LGBT community’s diverse cultural traits and societal viewpoints must be considered while diagnosing and treating them. Respectful approaches to disclosure, discrimination, and other LGBT concerns are essential for success—the need to address LGBT mental health issues.

- Significant symptoms associated with Depressive Disorders.
- A person has persistent sadness or a bad mood.
- Depression sometimes causes anhedonia, the loss of pleasure from formerly rewarding activities.
- Changes in appetite or weight.
- Sleep problems, including insomnia or hypersomnia, may occur.
- Individuals often experience weariness or low energy.
- The person feels low self-esteem or excessive guilt.
- Individuals often struggle to focus or make decisions.
- The person obsesses about death or self-harm.
- List three things that you have learned from this reading.
- The accumulation of information on the diagnostic criteria and subtypes of depressive disorders has given me the tools to successfully identify and evaluate clients who show these diseases.
- The reading highlighted the importance of adopting a holistic approach to treatment, including medication, psychotherapy, and social support (Taraji P. Henson on living with depression and anxiety | Body stories | SELF, 2019). I may implement this strategy by advocating for the incorporation of complete treatment plans for the people I work with.
- It is of the utmost significance to have a solid understanding of the cultural and personal variances in the experience and manifestation of depression (Taraji P. Henson on living with depression and anxiety | Body stories | SELF, 2019). It is possible to put this knowledge into practice by tailoring treatments to meet particular customers’ specific requirements and expectations
- Primary Interventions for Depressive Disorders
- Psychotherapy, including CBT and IPT, may help.
- Depression therapy using antidepressants and medication control.
- Lifestyle changes, including food and exercise.
- Support group and social network participation to help individuals in need.
- Techniques for stress reduction and mental and physical relaxation

- This reading will improve my capacity to identify and help depressed people in my career. Through scientifically-based and culturally appropriate therapy, I can help depressed people.

- Synopsis: “Eve’s Bayou” explores the intricate relationships inside an African-American family in Louisiana. The essay discusses familial secrets, marital adultery, and spiritual concerns (Eve’s Bayou (1997 movie) official trailer – Samuel L. Jackson, Lynn Whitfield, Jurnee Smollett, 2022).
- Clinical assessment: Characters are clinically examined for their mental health, interpersonal interactions, and adaptive coping skills. For example, Roz, the mother, may suffer emotional pain due to her partner’s adultery.
- Current concerns: Marital instability, psychological anguish from adultery, and family secrets.
- Suggested Solution: Family counseling to address communication and trust issues.

- Synopsis: The film “Bastard Out of Carolina” follows Bone, a little girl who grows up in a troubled family with abuse and violence (Good Drama movie, 2023). Clinical assessment: The assessment would focus on Bone and her mother, Anney, ‘s psychological effects from mistreatment.
- Current Concerns: Child abuse, trauma, unstable families, and violence are possible issues.
- Suggested Solution: Early intervention may include child protective services to safeguard Bone and therapy for Bone and Anney to address trauma and develop coping skills.

What cultural characteristics and societal attitudes pertaining to the LGBT community would you need to take into account in responding effectively to the diag nosis and treatment of Henry if he were gay?
