What types of clinical devices and equipment does your preceptor and his/her coworkers use that he/she is responsible to manage (e.g., electronic beds, IV pumps, physiological monitoring devices, barcode scanners, and automatic dispensing cabinets, biometrics)? Explain the available end-user training that is associated with these devices and equipment. Is it sufficient? Why or why not? If not, what are your suggestions for improvement?

Seek out your facility’s EHR downtime plan and read about what work-around strategies they have set in place for this situation. Does the plan make sense to you? Why or why not? If there is no downtime plan, create an outline describing the components/strategies it should include.

Week 5 Discussion

Interoperability is a big focus with current healthcare system implementation. Why do you feel interoperability is so important? Does it affect patient safety outcomes? Why or why not? Talk to your preceptor or another team member at your facility about the current interoperability status they have between their systems. Have them expand on future opportunities they see and share your findings with your peers.

How does your facility support end-users when a new system is implemented? Besides initial training, are the following provided: a user manual, a help desk or ticketing system for issues, feedback surveys, etc.? Review the specific items that are provided, discuss their value with your peers, and list any suggestions you might have for improvement.

Team building is an important skill when leading a project. Talk to your preceptor about how he/she establishes a team to work on a new project. Ask questions about leading teams, selecting team members, overall facilitation, coaching, team member participation, assigning roles, communication, and promoting accountability. Discuss your findings with your peers.
