Description
Please click on “.”
Pick and listen to a podcast of a topic of your interest. Each podcast will last about 5 minutes and you can download the transcript.
Please look up more information about the main organism discussed in the podcast and write a report about the organism. Include the scientific name(s) of the organism(s). If there are more than one organism described, please choose only one, but summarize the podcast briefly.Your primary report should address the following points:
- Brief summary of podcast
Full scientific and common name of the organism.
Classification of the organism including species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom and domain.
- Overview of physical and physiological characteristics
- 200 words or longer and a reference ().
Part II – Discussion Participation
- Write a response to at least two other students, commenting on their report and asking a question about the report, including questions about the scientists who performed the research and the organisms under discussion. Please make sure to answer all questions in reply to your report in detail.
. The organism that I picked is the Box Jelly fish. The pod cast begins with a story about an ocean goer who got stung three times all over her body. She describes a firey pain and shortness of breath. This pain recided and she decided to drive herself home from the beach. Close to home the pain came back harsher than ever. She got home and tried the known remedies for jelly fish stings but nothing worked. She was bed ridden for days. This expierience led her down the path of studying and developing treatments for the pain of the box jelly fish. The box jelly fish’s scientific name is the Carybdea alata and as discovered in the pod cast, it means winged ones of the sea. The jellyfish is in the domain; eukarya, kingdom; animillia, phylum; cnidaria, class; cubozoa, order; carybeida, family; carybdeidae, genus; carybdea, species; Carybdea alata. The jellyfish has a transparent bell about 5 cm wide and 5 cm in depth, and 8 cm tall with 4 tentacles hanging from each corner of the box. The tenticales deliverd a powerful toxin to the jellyfish’s prey to allow the jellyfish to eat the stunned prey.
The tentacles wrap around the prey and slowly bring it up
to the transparent bell. They are known as the ziploc bags of the sea due to the facy they are almost see through. You do not want to get stung by one of these. 2. Mathew Lesley made this research and said that there are two species of dolphins. In the eastern pacific,
Spinner and spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) have a special bond with tuna. Meaning, they are found together. When fishers fish tunas, they pull up the dolphins together with a net. In a single fishing trip, thousands of dolphins die. Therefore, a program was developed for 150 biologists to observe the tuna boats and count how many dolphins are killed as well as collect as many samples as possible to understand the impacts of dolphins. Dolphins are classified as mammals. In addition to the first estimate of how many dolphins have died, it resulted in the best collection of tissues in the world. At Noah fishery science center, there is a shelf that contains hundreds of dolphin jaws and Biologists use the teeth from the jaws to determine the age of the dolphins. There are more than 40,000 dolphin jaws in a room that has the size of a small gymnasium. Mathew calls that place the “Morgue.” Of the tuna fishery, over 6 million dolphins have died without the fishermen noticing. Therefore, the fishers were told to change their nets which can allow the dolphins to escape. This reduced from ten thousand dolphins to only thousands of dolphins to be captured by the net. Yet, both the spotted and spinner dolphins haven’t still recovered. The reason isn’t still discovered. To measure a species, people must be sure that all populations are recovered. When the dolphin goals were measured by Bill Paren, he found three populations of spinner dolphins and two populations of spinner dolphins. To manage the dolphins, conservationists have used these population definitions. When Mathew Lesley looked at the different skulls of the Dolphins, he thought the genes would be the difference too. Yet! He couldn’t see the differences. He is now using the DNA he got from the Morgue to get the recovery plan right. Sharks are mammals. Great White Sharks also are known as “Carcharodon Carcharias” are the most known predators. With the Massachusetts division of marine fisheries, Greg Scomo who is one of the four most shark experts in the world will be working on this case. Questions were asked by schools in Massachusetts. The answers were as follows: Sharks don’t have good population assessment information which makes it difficult for the students to answer. What sharks eat depends on their age. For example, if they are small, they eat fish because they have long and sharp teeth and when they grow up to about 9-10 feet long, they feed on marine mammals because of their teeth structure changes. It changes to a large and wide cutting tooth.Bigger sharks feed on smaller sharks too, but what really kills the great white sharks are killer whales. Great white sharks don’t usually mate for life unless they see the opposite sex and it is the right time of the year. Also, shark attacks are low. However, people should avoid swimming with sharks at the time between daylight and nighttime, when it is dim. And they also mustn’t swim and go offshore alone. The largest measured great white shark was 21 feet long and weighs several thousand pounds. Almost 30 people were standing on and around that great white shark and its very big.

You could email me at any time or send me a message via the “message” icon in halo if you need to contact me. I check my email regularly, so you should get a response within 24 hours. If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to
I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.
Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.
If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.
Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
