Alternate Living Environments

Alternate Living Environments

Alternate Living Environments

Part 1 of the Alternate Living Environments assignment required you to choose an alternative living facility in your community and present an overview of it. Week Six’s assignment gives you the opportunity to learn more about that facility. Following your interview with the facility administrator, write a 1,750- to 2,100-word paper.

Is your facility accepting new patients? Is there a waiting list? Assisted Living in Charlestown has a waiting list, but Skilled Nursing does not.
What impact do new demographics have on your facility? The housing market is one of the new demographics affecting the facility. The housing market has an impact on independent living. Poor housing sales in the community frequently impact residents’ ability to pay entrance deposits. This has an impact on both ALF and SNF. Furthermore, the retirement of baby boomers is changing the way businesses operate. Improved immunities, such as technology, and larger spaces are some examples.
What marketing strategies do you employ to promote your facility? Television, web-based, social media, print media, personal outreach coordinators, hospital liaisons, public and professional events, continuing education opportunities, and fairs and carnivals are among the marketing methods.

Who is the primary payer—out-of-pocket or private pay, insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid? I.L (private pay), ALF (private pay), long term care insurance, benevolent care fund, SNF (private pay (long term care), Medicare (short stay), Managed care (short stay), Medicaid (for residents who meet financial eligibility), and long term care insurance are the primary payer sources.

Are personal or nursing care services available in your living situation? Yes, all levels of care are available from IL through certified home health or home support, and ALF- is available. Full-time staff 240 hours per day, SNF-full-time staff 240 hours per day

What is the staff or organizational structure in place to support the services offered by your facility? On campus, there are 1300 employees in the staff or organizational structure. The continuing care ALF/SNF employs 450 people? Nursing, dining, housekeeping, social work, physicians, programming, administration, and so on. Management and support services are provided by corporate partners.

Is there anything extra, such as a barbershop, beauty shop, or ice cream parlor? Restaurants, stores, barber shop, beauty salon, fitness center, pools, putting course, theater, T.V. and creative arts studio, bus and ambo service, medical center, conference facilities, library, model railroad room, computer lab with high-speed internet, and woodworking and hobby shop are among the special amenities. You can also use the following essential services: An onsite medical center staffed by full-time physicians, a convenience store, a bank and an ATM, and an on-site pharmacy with free delivery to your door.

Is transportation provided to nearby service facilities if there are no special services on-site? While most services are available on campus, transportation is still available through the numerous buses that are provided.

What kinds of recreational activities are available? Provide a list of possibilities. The recreational opportunities in IL include: ballroom dancing, walking club, Charlestown fishing club, Bocce ball, Wii Entertainment group, Charlestown steppers and Charlestown sluggers, and ALF/SNF- full programming calendar of events. Pet lovers association, wine appreciation groups, New Yorker’s club, Charlestown Jewish community, Poet’s corner, Elderhostel life long Institute (ELLIC), Midweek Matinees and weekly movies, Mah Jong players, Nature trail committee, Knights of Columbus, and Treasures Unlimited are just a few of the social clubs available. Chapel Concert Series, Community television, Wood Shop and Carving of Charlestown, Black Swan Yacht Club, Garden Club, Little Theater Company, and Charlestown Film Library are some of the Hobbies.

What technological issues or challenges does the facility have? The campus is over 30 years old, and the ALF/SNF institutional model is one of the technological issues or challenges. Over the next five years, the plan will be repositioned to include the construction of a newer ALF and SNF as well as the addition of new products such as memory care. Transition to a person-centered approach is one of the program changes. Culture change will also be difficult because it will take 5-7 years.

How do you think health-care reform will affect your hospital? The Health Care Reform will have the following effects: Changes and reductions in Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement are expected. Part-time and PRN (flex) employees are affected. This law restricts the number of hours that employees can work in a week, and the health insurance premiums will affect both residents and employees.

What changes would you like to see made to the facility in the future, as the administrator? The facility improvements that I and the administrator would like to make are divided into three categories. People – education in a person-centered approach. Plant repositioning the new ALF/SNF as well as program improvement – a 5-7 year culture change journey

Is there any current research in the field or study of gerontology that could influence future planning for your facility, such as demographic data, health, and well-being? The current study is based on market research into what consumers want from senior living communities.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
