Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Values Exhibiting Professionalism is important when it comes to nursing. Altruisms is the principle of exhibiting concern for happiness of others. Autonomy refers to the rights patient have to make their own decisions about their medical care. Maintaining human dignity and integrity is important to our patient and their care because it shows that we support the decisions they make all while trying to improve and make them get better. This leads to a nurse to client relationship in which both side have mutual understanding and can lead to higher quality of care for the patient. Social justice implies that everyone deserves equal rights and opportunities to attain their highest level of health. Exhibiting all these qualities are important because it leads to a higher quality of care. If we’re able to look pass individual social standing or background, we can provide the same quality of care that every patient truly deserves. Essential VIII refers to professionalism and professional values. How I achieved this criteria was during my Med surg rotation. I had a patient who was comatose for a month. My nurse had told me that my patient was part of the navy from injury on duty and was left in a coma. While I was in there, I noticed that the room seemed more like a house room than it did a patient room. I realized that the mom had been staying with her son everyday for the last month. During my shift, I offered to talk to the patient and even bathe him. During this, the mom was telling me stories about her son and how much she appreciate the little things I did. To me, I truly believe that every patient deserves the same quality of care despite who they are or what condition they are in. Whether they are awake, sedative, orientated, etc it should not change the way we treat our patient. As a future nurse, I strive to give every single one of patient the same quality of care and hopefully they get discharged feeling better and with a smile on their face. 1. 2. Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice Throughout our nursing career, we had to take multiple GE classes such as pathophysiology, capstone and critical thinking. Many of these classes are designed to help us understand how the body works and how to take care of patients who comes from different background than us. Nursing core theory classes gave us information on diseases, conditions, treatments and role of nurses while clinical allow us to get hands on experience and hopefully implement what we learn from theory to clinical. Going through nursing school, we’re put in a new clinical rotation every term where we’re able to see and learn a little of everything all across nursing. Not only does this educate us in different nursing field but also how to interact with different kinds of patients from pediatrics to adults and older adults. Essential IX refers to baccalaureate generalist nursing practice. I was able to achieve this outcome through clinical rotations. I’m a very curious individual and always like to know and understand everything that is happening. During clinical rotations, I love to ask my nursing that I’m shadowing questions on how to do certain procedures. If I see my nurse do certain things, I would why they do the things they do. I think every question is important and asking questions help improve one’s own thinking. The more questions I ask, the more I understand and this will help me when I take care of my own patients in the future. 1. 2.
