WK 1 DQ 1 Due 10/23 Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap. I currently work at a 42 bed Long term acute care hospital (LTACH) where our patients are becoming sicker and sicker due to always changing regulations to be accepted to an LTACH. I have slowly worked my way up and in the last few years have seen the impact leadership and management can have on an organization as a whole. I believe leaders can be seen in bedside nurses, charge nurses, and nurse managers. We all can lead when we use our voices. This journey to get my BSN, has taught me to always encourage and grow those around me. Nothing is accomplished by complaining. Use your voice and let your leaders know your concerns, but also be willing to give some solutions. Nursing itself has become one of the most demanding work environments. Leaders have to deal with such concerns as health and safety of patients and staff, job-related injuries, stress and nurse burnout, as well as physical threats and verbal abuse to their staff. “The primary goal of nurse managers is to enable the creation of nursing departments that are well structured, ensure that the organizational context supports the work of nurses, and provide skilled coaching to assist nurses in maximizing their performance processes as a means of harvesting the collective synergies of the nursing staff” (Henriksen, 2016). They are responsible for establishing rapport among staff, diagnosing problems, and instituting change. Leaders such as nurse managers are more hands on and can bridge the gap between bedside care and management. Management is more upper level and are less hands on. They focus more on policy setting, and overseeing policies and quality measures. NRS451V Approaches in Leadership and Management Paper
“They are charged with fulfilling the organization’s mission, vision and strategic long-range plans” (Williamson, 2017). I feel the overlap is that we all have the same goal, to provide a safe work environment that provides quality nursing care. We can take advantage of this by using our voices bringing concerns to our nurse leaders and managers. Anytime a nurse speaks up and is advocating for patient safety and quality of care, they are demonstrating leadership skills. References Henriksen, J. P. (2016, January). Provide an overview of each and discuss the strengths and weakness in relation to nursing practice. A leadership style can have great impact on a health care organization. According to Whitney (2018), Leaders can significantly influence staff productivity, morale, and turnover rates, which can also indirectly influence patient care. I have worked at my current place of employment for 10 years and have worked under the two styles I will discuss. So, I have seen the impacts both can have. First, we will discuss Laissez-Faire, or the hands-off approach. This style in my opinion is not good in most settings. Policies tend to be made as reactive instead of proactive. Then such policies are implemented without any feedback, and have little to no supervision for follow through. In our facility this cause the bar of acceptable behavior and practice to lower significantly. The staff was frustrated, management was at a loss on what to do. Our turnover rate was 44% and staff engagement was nonexistent. We then were led by a leader who fit more of the Participative style. She had her work cut out for her, but she engaged the staff and encouraged them to use their voice to make a difference. She implemented policies and used a team approach. The staff felt more valued and as if they were part of the team. She formed committees and made sure there was follow through. She micro managed where it was necessary. It was interesting the staff who where already doing what they needed to were not bothered by this, but the staff who were not had issues. References Whitney, S. (2018). Provide details about this in your post. If faced with a mandated reporter issue, what are the steps in reporting the issue? Create a mandated reporter scenario and post it. Respond to one of your peer’s scenarios using the guidelines for submission/reporting in your state. Be sure to include a reference to your state’s website related to mandated reporting. Per the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) website, Texas law says anyone who thinks a child, or person 65 years or older, or an adult with disabilities is being abused, neglected, or exploited must report it to DFPS. This applies to all individuals and it not limited to health care workers. According to the DFPS here are some examples of things that must be reported” • Child abuse and neglect. • Abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and exploitation of the elderly or adults with disabilities living at home. • Abuse of children in child-care facilities or treatment centers. • Abuse of adults and children who live in state facilities or are being helped by programs for people with mental illness or intellectual disabilities. These are run by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) or Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). This is confidential and any person who reports is immune from civil or criminal liability. You an call 1800-252-5400 or online at Texas abuse hotline at https://www.txabusehotline.org/Login/Default.aspx. NRS451V Approaches in Leadership and Management Paper
I have seen cases where an elderly person is being cared for at home by family and are brought it dirty, unkempt with multiple wounds. Elder care of a bed bound patient is difficult and many times families do not have the resources. I have seen cases where the family seemed to really be trying and cases where it seemed the families where in it for financial reasons, but that was not for me to decide. The next step is to contact case management who will then file a formal complaint on the behalf of our facility. References Report Abuse, Neglect, or Exploitation. (n.d.).
