Running head: SENIOR HEALTH 1 Senior Health Dilsy Ricardo Florida National University Nursing Department BSN Program NUR 4636 – Community Health Nursing Prof. Eddie Cruz, RN MSN November 27, 2019 SENIOR HEALTH 2 SENIOR HEALTH Mention and discuss the healthy people 2020 wellness goals and objectives for older adults. The increasing number of older adults in the United States has made the federal government to focus on different activities that promote the health of older adults. The goal of healthy people 2020 is to improve the function, quality of life and the general health of the elderly population. According to Bolin et al (2015), the United States has 49.2 million older adults aged above 65 years. It is projected that this number will increase in the coming years to reach 98 million older adults by 2060. Unfortunately, the chronic illnesses remain a major health problem facing older adults. It’s the objective of Healthy people 2020 to increase the number of geriatric physicians in the United States. This is because of the growing need for geriatric physicians which results from the growing population of older adults. According to Gimm and Kitsantas (2016), only 2.7% of geriatric physicians are certified. Healthy people, 2020 targets to increase the number of certified geriatric physicians by 3% which will mark a 10% improvement. The main problem facing this objective is financial problems. Specialization in geriatric medicine increases the medical school debt of doctors. Also, most physicians have little interest in geriatric because older adults are covered by Medicaid and Medicare which are less beneficial for health insurance agencies. Healthy people 2020 targets to increase the number of physical therapists with geriatric certification by 0.7%. Currently, approximately 1% of physical therapists have geriatric certification. Older adults suffer from health conditions that can be improved SENIOR HEALTH 3 through physical therapy (Adams, Katz & Shenson, 2016). This includes osteoporosis, arthritis, balance disorders, joint and hip replacement, Alzheimer’s disease and incontinence. Physical therapy can improve the quality of life for older adults. Define and discuss the aging process and the demographic characteristics of the elderly population in your community. Aging is the process of growing old and it is determined by genetics and modulated by the environment. According to Carr and Weir (2017), aging occurs throughout the person’s lifespan. During the young age, aging is characterized by discovery, growth and maturation. Scientists believe that aging results from the interaction of different factors which include disease, genes, environment, and lifestyle. Aging can be defined from a psychological, functional, chronological and biological perspective. Functional age is measured based on individual capabilities. NUR4636 Senior Health Response
In contrast, biological age is determined by the changes experienced by the different parts of the body. The chronological is based on time. On the other hand, the psychological age is determined by a person’s actions and feelings. Several biological changes occur during the aging process for most persons above 65 years. Older adults experience bladder problems like frequent urination. This results from the relaxation of bladder muscles which is caused by nerve damage, infection, and irritation. According to Scharlach (2017), bones lose mineral at the age of 35 years and this causes muscle, bones and joint pains. This explains why older adults suffer from injuries caused by falls. The aging process can lead to eyesight, hearing, and respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolism and memory problems. SENIOR HEALTH 4 In my community, there are more elderly men above 65 years as compared to women. Most of the older adults own homes although some older adults live in nursing homes, homes owned by relatives and rented accommodation. Older women above 65 years report more health problems compared to men (Parish et al, 2019). Most senior adults in my community are working although they still assume parenting roles by raising their grandchildren. Nevertheless, most charity organizations have a focus on health programs that improve the quality of life of older adults. Identify and discuss nursing actions that address the needs of older adults Nurses play an influential role in encouraging older adults to engage in physical exercise. According to Miller (2018), physical exercise reduces mortality and morbidity, improves quality of life and reduces disability. Nurses come up with a home exercise program that supports older adults to walk safely without any assistance. Such a program promotes the freedom of senior adults, reduces the risk of injuries resulting from falls by 40%, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases like stroke, lung disease, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, and depression. Regular exercise restores restful sleep, maintain a healthy weight, strengthens the bones and improves heart health. A healthy diet plays a major role in preventing diseases among older adults. This is because the weakening immune system of older adults predisposes them to diseases. Nurses provide dietary advice to older adults recovering from illnesses. This is a common activity conducted by community nurses who address the health needs of the community. Also, nurses work closely with older adults suffering from management. They provide them with dietary options that are crucial in managing diabetes. Nurses can conduct nutrition presentations to senior adults in local healthcare centers. SENIOR HEALTH 5 Senior adults have prescribed multiple drugs and this increases the risk of overdose and inappropriate medication. Nurses have a major role in monitoring medication use by older adults. Thus, nurses follow up to see whether the older adults are taking the prescribed medication at the specified time. Also, nurses address allergies and drug overdose issues affecting older adults. According to Schenker et al (2015), some medications prescribed to older adults, especially those suffering from mental health problems, can cause deliriums, hallucinations and increase the risk of falls. Nurses conduct follow-ups to confirm that the senior adults are doing well even when under medication. Mention and discuss health/illness concerns common to the elderly people Arthritis is a common health problem facing the elderly population. Most elderly people above 65 years have suffered from arthritis. Currently, 49.7% of senior adults in the United States are diagnosed with arthritis and this has lowered their quality of life. Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis cause chronic pain which can lead to sleep disturbances and depression. The major symptoms of arthritis include joint destruction, stiffness, and swelling. The continuous deterioration of joints can cause permanent damage and deformity. According to Scannapieco and Cantos (2016), arthritis is the leading cause of disability among the elderly population. NUR4636 Senior Health Response
Unfortunately, the actual cause of arthritis is yet to be discovered. World Health Organization (WHO) explains that heart disease is the leading cause of death for most elderly people aged above 65 years. However, more men suffer from heart disease as compared to women. According to Chatterji et al (2015), 37% of men and 26% of women aged above 65 years suffer from heart disease. Scientists explain SENIOR HEALTH 6 that aging predisposes people to the risks associated with heart disease. The major risk factors include high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. These two factors increase the risk of suffering from a stroke or heart disease. However, a healthy lifestyle and physical exercise reduce the risk of heart disease. From the recent CDC reports, most elderly people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Verma et al (2017) explain that Alzheimer’s disease accounts for approximately 92,604 death of elderly people. This is confirmed by reports from Alzheimer’s association which indicate that 1 out of 9 elderly people above 65 years suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. It is difficult for a health practitioner to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease thus there is no exact number of elderly people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Medical experts assert that cognitive impairment lowers the quality of life for the elderly population. SENIOR HEALTH 7 Reference Adams, M. L., Katz, D. L., & Shenson, D. (2016).
