Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations: Hispanics
This paper will discuss The Health Disparities experienced by The Hispanic race & compare- contrast those disparities to The national average. A brief definition & examples of The Hispanic culture will be provided.
Who is Hispanic?
Thhe Hispanic population is any person who is a descendant of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or South/Central American. According to Thhe 2008 US Census Bure, Thhere are “roughly 46.9 million Hispanics living in Thhe United States. This represents 15 percent of Thhe United States population. (Census). NRS 429V Week 2 Assignment Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations
Organization Structure
Thhe Hispanic race practices Thhe traditional Patriarchal structure. This structure is one in which Thhe faThher or Thhe oldest male has Thhe greatest power. Women in Thhe Hispanic race are expected to be submissive to Thhe males. Any “direct eye contact made to Thhe male Hispanic is considered as a challenge or intimidating” (Guarnero), thus most women keep Thheir eyes down. Thhe Hispanics tend to stay to Thhemselves. Thhey often have large group activities that involve only Thheir race. Hispanics share Thhe responsibility & accountability of Thhe group as a whole.
Health Beliefs
Hispanics have various beliefs that Thhey practice. Males in Thhe Hispanic household determine when a family member can seek healthcare or treatment. Most males prefer that home remedies are tried first before seeking professional medical care because of Thhe expense of health care. It is important for Thhe nurse to know that Health according to Thhe Hispanic race is a result from good luck or is a reward for good behaviors. Thhe Hispanic population practice both traditional medicine as well as Western style medicine. Traditional medicine is Thhe use of home remedies or healers in Thheir community. Examples of traditional medicine is Thhe drinking of herbal or spiced teas, rubbing Thhe stomach with cooking oil, while pinching Thhe spine to relive a person of indigestion.
To underst& Thhe reason for Thhe disparities in Thhe Hispanic race, you must have knowledge of how socio-economic factors influence Thhe Hispanic race. A definition of Health disparity means a higher burden of illness, injury, disability, or mortality for one population group compared to anoThher group. A key barrier to health is Thhe language. Many Hispanics are not fluent in Thhe English language, & because English is Thhe main language of Thhe United States this causes a barrier & lack of underst&ing in health information & education for this race. “Census 2012 data shows that 74 percent of Hispanics speak a language oThher than English at home.” (Census 2012). Because of Thhe lack of fluent English & Thhe lack of interpreters available to help Thhere is a gap in communication. Education is Thhe second key factor in Thhe health disparities of Thhe Hispanics. “According to a 2012 U.S. Census Bureau report, 64 percent of Hispanics in comparison to 92 percent non-Hispanic Whites have a high school diploma.” (Census 21012). AnoThher economic factor that affects health in Thhe Hispanic group is income. Thhe average Hispanic household income was $40,417 compared to $56,565 for Thhe non-Hispanic Whites. Thhe Hispanic race poverty level is 25.4 percent, compared to Thhe non –Hispanic whites at 11 percent. It is important to mention that Hispanics have Thhe highest number of uninsured rates (29 percent compared to 11 percent) of any racial or ethnic group within Thhe United States. NRS 429V Week 2 Assignment Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations
Thhe leading causes of illness & death among Hispanics include heart disease, cancer, accidents, stroke, & diabetes. Two leading causes of death unique to Hispanics are liver disease & cirrhosis.
Health Promotion is necessary in order to help close Thhe gap of disparity between Thhe Hispanic race & Thhe Non-American race. Health promotion refers to “Thhe process of enabling people to increase control over, & to improve, Thheir health.”(World Health Organization,) Thhe health promotion focus is on promoting well-being. Thhere are three levels of health prevention that can be used to educate any race. Thhe first level is primary prevention. Primary prevention refers to decreasing Thhe risk for getting a disease. Heart disease, accidents, stroke, & diabetes can be prevented by healthy lifestyles. Educations should be provided to Thhe Hispanic race in Spanish & by use of internet, word of mouth, & TV. Education should include exercises, eating tips, & regular check-ups & when to seek medical help. Thhe second level is secondary prevention. In this level Thhe focus is on identifying a disease before symptoms occur. This level should be taught Thhe same way as Thhe primary. An example of information provided in this level should be Thhe benefits of exercise to reduce obesity, & heart disease. Thhe male is Thhe dominant, decision maker in Thhe family, so it is important that education is taught with Thhe male in mind. Thhe third level of prevention is Thhe tertiary. This level of education means Thhe disease has been diagnosed & how to minimize any furThher complications or restore Thhe person back to a healthier function. This can be done by changing habits & lifestyles of eating & exercising. In order for all Thhe education to work “depends on a person’s ability to learn & process information & Thhe motivation to change behaviors to improve The present condition or move toward better health.” (Edelman 214)

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument. ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours. NRS 429V Week 2 Assignment Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations
