Substance Use Prevention
Substance Use Prevention
The article “A Systematic Review of Interventions for Homeless Youth: Health, Social, and Equity Outcomes” analyzes the unique experiences homeless youth face and how they subsequently require interventions tailored to their needs. The review outlined some of the most common pathways homeless youth experiences, such as family conflict, child abuse, and neglect. The review also explored how homeless youth face unique challenges, such as health, social, and equity issues, not faced by the adult homeless population.
The review then synthesized evidence on the various interventions and their impacts on health, social, and equity factors. The review revealed that interventions must be tailored to the needs of homeless youth, as different interventions can have varying levels of success for different youths. The review also found that interventions that took a holistic approach to tackle multiple issues at once were more successful in addressing the issues. In terms of equity outcomes, the review found that equity variables were inconsistently measured. However, the review did find some data that suggested the potential for differential outcomes based on the youth’s gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Though there is more to be done to understand and address equity outcomes, this review provides valuable insight into how homeless youth experience unique issues and require dedicated intervention.
Regarding our course, Social Work and Substance Use and Addiction, this review provides insight into how different interventions can be tailored to help individuals in vulnerable or marginalized populations. This article is especially relevant to this week’s reading on Substance Use Prevention. The review reveals how interventions must be customized to the individual or population to be effective, as different populations experience different needs and challenges. Additionally, the review highlights the need to consider variables such as gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation when designing interventions and assessing their success. Though the review focused on homelessness, it highlights the importance of considering different individuals’ complex and varied needs when designing interventions.
