Assessment for Health Promotion

Assessment for Health Promotion

Excessive sleepiness simply hypersomnia is a condition which is triggered by accumulated sleep as a result of inadequate sleeping time. An assessment will prove Maria to be suffering from this condition bearing in mind she doesn’t have enough sleeping time due to her tight schedule. This will be realized when she will start experiencing symptoms such as feeling unusually tired frequently, drowsiness despite sleeping and also difficulty in thinking and making critical decisions.

Weight gain which Maria has experienced is a health hazard. Severe health conditions such as coronary heart diseases, diabetes and hypertension occur due to weight gain (Puhl & Brownell, 2001). Consumption of too much caffeine which she does is a health concern also as caffeine induces anxiety, nervousness and jitters. This can result to rapid breathing and increased stress levels. In addition, caffeine intake causes muscle breakdown which leads to damaged muscle fibers which enters the blood stream resulting to kidney failure a very critical condition.

Maria spends most of her time working which has health implications. Introduction of health promotion in work places which focuses on keeping people healthy will benefit Maria. This program will engage and empower her to choose healthy behaviors and improve on practices that may lead to health complications (Webber & Kelley, 2017). In a nutshell, the program is aimed on having control over her health. In this case she will have to reduce the amount of coffee intake, improve on sleeping hours and observe and limit her eating habits which are leading to an increase in body weight.

The normal or ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg  (Webber & Kelley, 2017). Maria’s is 148/90mmHg which is a clear indication that she has high blood pressure. This condition is caused by excess weight or obesity, lack of exercises among others which results to extra strain on the blood vessels, heart and other body organs for instance the brain and kidneys. As a result, heart diseases, attacks and strokes can be experienced which are life threatening.

In conclusion, this condition however can be controlled through losing weight by exercising regularly through cardiac exercises which leads to burning of fat. Cutting down on caffeine intake will also help in controlling this health condition.

Assessment for Health Promotion

Paper details
The Assignment
As the school nurse working in a college health clinic, you see many opportunities to
promote health. Maria is a 40-year-old Hispanic who is in her second year of nursing
school. She complains of a 14-pound weight gain since starting school and is afraid of
what this will do to both her appearance and health if the trend continues. After
conducting her history, you learn that she is an excellent cook and she and her family
love to eat foods that reflect their Hispanic heritage. She is married with two school-age
children. She attends class a total of 15 hours per week, plus she must be present for
12 hours of labs and clinical. She maintains the household essentially by herself and
does all the shopping, cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring of the children. She states
that she is lucky to get 5 hours of sleep per night, but that is okay with her. She drinks
coffee all morning to “keep her going.” She lives 1 hour from campus and commutes
each day, and often drinks diet cola to “stay awake.” When asked what she does to
relax and de-stress, Maria states she “doesn’t even have time to think about that.”
Maria’s vitals today are as follows; T 98.6, R 20, HR 88, BP 148/90
