HCR 577 Euphrosyne (sertraline) Summary

This presentation examines the introduction of Euphrosyne (sertraline), a form of the SSRI drug, into the German market. The drug is usually applied to treat mental health conditions like depression, PTSD, OCD, panic disorder, PMDD, and social anxiety, as explained by Ehlers et al. (2024). It is orally administered and is safe and effective in adults and in children as old as six years of age, yet limited data concerning its safety and efficacy in children younger than six years remain unknown.

The project focuses on entering the German market through the Decentralized Procedure (DCP), which allows approval in multiple countries at the same time. This route is less expensive and quicker than other routes (Costa-Font et al., 2014). Nevertheless, firms are required to comply with stringent regulatory conditions prior to receiving the approval.

The German market presents several challenges that may affect success. There is strong price competition due to many generic drugs, which reduces profit margins. The rebate contract system creates a “winner takes all” situation, and strict bioequivalence rules must also be followed carefully (Gultig, 2026).

Irrespective of these problems, the market has good opportunities. Germany has a high demand for SSRIs, and mental health awareness continues to grow. This increases the number of prescriptions and helps to maintain a huge and growing market of generics (Moore, 2025).

Companies need to be strategic and decisive in order to be successful. Introducing the product at the end of the patent period assists in gaining early market share (Welle, 2015). Maintaining product quality and strong coordination between teams is also important.

To sum it up, Germany has a promising future despite price constraints. It is attractive due to high demand and market size. Success depends on a good strategy and early entry.
