What are my basic values and moral principles? Are they true just for me, or are some of them true universally?

After conducting a self-assessment, it is evident that my basic values and moral principles are shaped by various factors. These factors are as follows: My humble upbringing, my cultural background, my personal experiences throughout my life till today, and my beliefs. Some of my most notable values are honesty, integrity, kindness, respect, and fairness. These values are very personal to me as a result of my unique experiences and perspectives. For example, having grown up in an African American background that values Christian teachings, I have grown to value honesty, integrity, kindness, respect, and fairness, which really emphasize the importance of having these values as a Christian. On the other hand, some of these values I might have acquired from my life experiences as they are considered universally true. These are values that are widely accepted across different cultures and societies. For instance, principles like honesty, respect for others, and fairness are values that I have always considered universally desirable and, as a result, included in my daily life.

How do my values and principles inform my behavior, my goals, and my interactions with others?

From an early age, basic values and principles have often guided my actions and decisions on various issues affecting my life. For instance, my basic value of honesty plays a huge role in striving to be truthful in all my daily activities, which leads to trustworthiness and reliability. In doing so, these values have led me to come up with very transparent and genuine goals. To add to this, it is very important to note that the principle of integrity has guided me to be true to my values and beliefs, which have been transmitted to my behavior and goals. This is evident in my life, as I have always pursued goals that align with my values and enable my interaction with others consistently and reliably. In other words, they serve as my moral compass that guides my actions and decisions toward ethical outcomes. It is very important to point out that the manifestation of these values can vary from person to person, depending on their personal beliefs, cultural background, and life experiences, as illustrated earlier.

How do these values and principles inform my opinion on a controversial subject?

As we know, controversial subjects come with varying information, which at times can be very misleading and misinformative; however, as an individual who values honesty. My duty has always been to seek truthful, unbiased information about any controversial subject before forming an opinion. This has led me to always be open about my views on these controversial subjects and be willing to engage in honest discussions. On the other hand, as a kind individual who values kindness, It has always been my principle to approach controversial subjects with empathy and compassion. This is by considering the impact of the issue on people’s lives and forming opinions that promote kindness and understanding.

How could studying ethics help to inform my moral outlook further?

From this self-assessment project, it is evident that by studying ethics will significantly enhance my moral outlook in the following ways. Studying ethics will provide me with a solid framework that will enhance my understanding of the basic principles of right and wrong. This will help me as an individual to understand the moral implications of my actions and decisions. On the other hand, studying ethics will play a huge role in providing me with very important tools that will enable me to make decisions that are not only legally compliant but also morally sound. It will help me to navigate the various complex moral dilemmas and make decisions that align with my moral compass.
