The Traumatic Experience of Growing Up in a Refugee Camp

Child XYZ is a pseudonym name that is used to protect the identity of a child that grew up in a refugee camp in East Africa due to political instability in their home country (Peterson, 2018). A majority of Eastern African country occupy then Savannah dry land, a region that favor’s the existence of the pastoralist communities. These are communities that move from one place to another with the aim of searching greener pastures for their livestock.  In the process of moving from one place to another these communities crush with one another, which results to tribe crushes and political instability leading to the displacement of people that end up in refugee camps. This essay explores the traumatic experiences Child XYZ faced, their coping mechanisms, and how these experiences will inform my practice as a social worker (Peterson, 2018).

When people are forced to free their homes, with the fear of being attacked they end up in refugee camps. Life in a refugee camp is fraught with hardships and lack of basic human needs. Therefore, from an early age after freeing from their home, Child XYZ faced numerous challenges including lack of clean water, inadequate shelter, and limited access to basic necessities. Many are the times they have witnessed violence, experienced hunger, and lived in constant fear of being killed by their warry neighbors. The trauma was not only related to war or persecution but also the brutal journey and harsh conditions at the overpopulated refugee camp. To cope up with the traumatic life at the refuge camp, Child XYZ had to come up with a coping mechanism. In that, despite these adversities, Child XYZ displayed remarkable resilience throughout their life till to date. One of this coping mechanism was the formation of a supportive relationships within the camp community, which provided emotional support and a sense of belonging. They also engaged extracurricular activities such as playing football and educational activities when available. These activities provided a sense of normalcy and a distraction from the harsh life at the refugee camp (Méndez-Fernández et al., 2021).

As a social worker, Child XYZ’s childhood traumatic experiences at the refugee camp will significantly inform my practice in the following ways; This child life at the refugee camp underscores the importance of understanding the client’s background and the impact of trauma on their lives. It also highlights the need for trauma-informed care (Levenson, 2017). This type of care involves recognizing the presence of trauma symptoms in an individual’s life and acknowledging the role that trauma plays in shaping the behaviors displayed lives of individuals all over the world. As a social worker dealing with such cases may are the times that we tend to counter-transference. This is the instance where a therapist projects their feelings unconsciously onto the client and mostly occurs when working with trauma survivors. To mitigate this, I will engage in regular self-reflection and supervision with the aim of maintaining professional boundaries, and seek personal therapy where need be (Madeson, 2023).

On this issue, it also important to highlight that working with trauma survivors can lead to vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress.  As a social worker, I will prioritize self-care, set healthy boundaries, seek peer support, and engage in regular supervision with the aim of managing the above-named risks. This case study places a very important role in reinforcing the need for social workers to be equipped with trauma-informed skills and self-care strategies. It also highlights the importance of policies and interventions that address the psychological needs of refugee children living in marginalized places around the world (Jharrington, 2022).

In a nutshell, child XYZ’s experiences provide valuable insights into the traumatic lives of children living in refugee camps. As a social worker, these insights will guide my practice, reminding me of the strength and resilience that can emerge from adversity, and the importance of trauma-informed care in supporting such individuals.
