The organization of choice is the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Drug Enforcement Administration is an independent agency of the Department of Justice in the United States government responsible for the enforcement of controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. The DEA works at both national and international levels to interdict drugs that are being trafficked and distributed within the U.S.

The DEA has over 10,000 employees; special agents, diversion investigators, chemists, and intelligence research specialists are just a few of many different careers available within the agency (DEA, n.d.). It has 241 domestic offices in 23 divisions in the United States and maintains 93 foreign offices around the world. It enforces its activities through investigating major drug trafficking organizations, coordinating with other federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations, and drug abuse prevention education (DEA, n.d.). The direct approach involves the key stakeholders and expert judgment in identifying the strategic issues critical to the agency’s challenges and opportunities.

Five Step Strategy Development Process

Five-Step Strategy Development Process

  1. Goal Setting: The process of defining specific measurable objectives in line with the mission statement
  2. Analysis: In-depth analysis of both internal and external environments through PEST and SWOT analyses that pinpoint the principal elements impacting the organization.
  3. Strategy Formulation: Formulating strategic plans from the insights reached through analysis for addressing identified issues and leveraging opportunities.
  4. Strategy Implementation: Executing strategies formulated through detailed action plans, resource allocation, and operational processes.
  5. Evaluation and Control: Tracking the progress and outcomes of implemented strategies continuously to reiterate what is necessary to stay aligned with the goals, which shall be applied to the DEA by using the five-step strategy development process.

Discuss the application of the five-step strategy development process in your selected organization (minimum 130 words).

  1. Goal Setting: Setting reduction goals in drug availability, dismantling drug trafficking organizations and preventing drug-related crimes is a function of the DEA.
  2. Analysis: The DEA conducts a PEST analysis wherein political factors are changing drug policies, economic factors are related to funding or resource availability, social factors are the public perception about drug use, and technological factors are new methods being used in drug trafficking.
  3. Strategy Formulation: In the light of the present case and analysis undertaken, the strategies designed by the DEA are to build international cooperation, improvement in the technology used in surveillance and interceptions of drugs, and community education activities as recommended by Mintzberg et al. (2020).
  4. Strategy Implementation: With the help of these designed strategies, the DEA trains agents in sophisticated surveillance methods, cooperates with international crime bureaus, and mounts publicity campaigns against drug usage.
  5. Evaluation and Control: The DEA keeps evaluating the trend in drug seizures, performance of international partnerships, and modifying strategies with changing trends of drug trafficking as evident in (Bryson, 2018; Mintzberg et al.,2020).

Discuss implications associated when strategic issues are not properly addressed in your selected organization (minimum 130 words).

If the strategic issues are not addressed properly, then there are several consequences that the DEA might need to incur. Among the negative outcomes of such poor strategies could be an increased degree of drug trafficking, higher rates of drug-related crimes, and a loss of confidence from the public. The inability of DEA to adapt to technological improvements utilized by drug trafficking entities has resulted in the weakening of its capacity with respect to dealing efficiently with drug-related activities. This can result in the DEA being left behind the increasing complexity of drug trafficking organizations, which continue to pump ever greater amounts of drugs onto the streets, exacerbating the drug crisis and furthering the threat to national security and public safety. Further, the poor approach to dismantlement of drug trafficking may lead to increased erosion of foreign relations and cooperation efforts that will further imperil the DEA’s mission as a whole.
