As followers, nurses display respect towards others which is also important. Being a follower also helps to establish trust, and confidence within the group along with the leader. 3. Describe a situation in which a person acted as a leader. Explain how you concluded that the person was a leader. A middle age man came through an ambulance to the ER after a car accident. The nurse went to check on the patient and took notice of blood dripping from her head with a small laceration. The patient seemed alert and awake with no pain, but her mouth and lips were pale, she asked the physician to come and assess the patient because the nurse presumed the patient WEEK 1 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS was not stable. After collecting blood samples, the patient began to experience nausea and the nurse called the doctor to assess her. The dressing on the laceration was soaked in blood and the doctor sutured the wound. The nurse then ordered a CBC in agreement with the doctor. In this case, the nurse demonstrated leadership skills through effective collaboration with the doctor. She took responsibility through identifying the problem with the patient and incorporated quick decision-making in delivering care. She assured the patient with trust and cares while attending to her and demonstrated good communication with the doctor in delivering fast and efficient care. 4. Review the different leadership theories discussed in this chapter. Which ones appeal to you as a guide for your future leadership development, and why? Which ones might be more difficult to apply in your life, and why? Laissez-faire Leadership: It is permissive and passive leadership where the leader adjourns decision-making to the team members. Autocratic Leadership: It involves decision-making in a centralization where the leader decides and use the power to control and command others. It is effective in achieving a simple outcome which is agreeable to all the team members and for prompt decision making. The type of leadership theory that would appeal to future leadership is autocratic leadership because delivering care to patients; it involves quick decision-making in recognizing symptoms that can prompt fast treatment. Laissez-faire leadership would not be right because undertaking the responsibility to treat and deliver care to the patient has more relay to recognize symptoms that are critical; and needs quick decision-making. 5. You have been working on a busy orthopedic unit for 6 months. The average patient length of stay in the unit is 4–7 days. The nurse manager has told you that she is counting on you to “demonstrate leadership and assist these new nurses to adapt to the work environment.” Based on the behaviors of an effective leader found in this chapter, how will you assist your new colleagues? To help the new nurses to adapt to the new environment, I would make sure that I portray good communication with them and form a personal relationship to recognize their main perceptions in demonstrating talent and skills. It would be good to encourage them to build selfawareness and demonstrate self-direction while performing duties. It would essential to establish trust and respect among themselves and towards the leader to increase support while attending to patients. I would give them specific directions and expect compliance from them; the nurses should display accountability for their actions and responses to the patient. Which ones appeal to you as a guide for your future leadership development, and why? Which ones might be more difficult to apply in your life, and why? As a guide for my future leadership development I think I will be able to relate more with the motivational theory. Motivating your followers will give them the ability to develop their WEEK 1 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 3 skills and give them a chance to improve their productivity while working in a friendly environment. On the other hand, behavioral theories I think will be more difficult for me to apply because it mostly deal with making decisions for team and giving strict orders which I will be having trouble to adjust to that kind of setting. 5. Have the students identify three goals for the next year that will assist you in becoming a more effective follower. 1. Listen, pay attention and be supportive of others new ideas and suggestions. 2. Inform your manager or leader right away if you discover a problem. 3. Establish and maintain good time management. 6. Review with the class the qualities of effective leaders discussed in this chapter. Some of the qualities of effective leaders discussed in this chapter are: integrity, responsibility, caring, courage, initiative, balance, good time-management, good communication skills, goal-oriented and perseverance. 7. Develop a 1- to 2-year leadership plan applying the qualities of effective leaders. Applying the qualities of effective leaders in this time frame I think it is important to recognize that the most important and most difficult person to lead will always be yourself. It is the aspect of leadership that will require the most discipline, commitment and WEEK 1 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 4 determination. Also it is critical for all leaders to have exceptionally strong interpersonal skills. Interacting with and persuading others is both an art and a science, and it includes: understanding others, motivating others and empowering others. 8. Identify these qualities in leaders that you known. What specific situations have you observed where these leaders have been effective and why? a) Identify specific situations. From my point of view, leaders need to possessed many qualities to be able to serve as a role model to others but one of the most important for me is to be knowledgeable. A leader is in charge of guide and delegate assignments to others and make sure tasks are meet by the specific standards. At work sometimes we come across assignments that requires group work and I have seen how the leadership skills of many coworkers have been effective because without a person guiding the group nothing would have ever being possible to accomplish and we wound have never being able to finish any task on time. 9.
