According to professionals in the field of sociology the different gender roles are as a result of socialization. Socialization involves the process of passing a community’s beliefs and values to its members (West & Zimmerman, 1987). The process mainly takes place during childhood when adults instruct young individuals how to conduct themselves to comply with the accepted code of conduct in the community.
According to Lorber (1994), gender differences are fundamentally a means to justify sexual stratification. Also, drawing from social constructionism, everything that individuals know or see is either partially or entirely socially constructed. This means that the different roles that males and females perform exist not in objective reality but as a result of social interactions. Alternatively, doing gender is all about believing in certain gender norms and taking part in activities that resonate with the given norms (West & Zimmerman, 1987). Further, Giddens (1984) states that the social structures play an essential role in shaping individuals but simultaneously individuals shape the social structure (Risman, 2004). It is therefore essential for individuals to realize factors that construct inequalities and come up with ways of creating a just world through activism. For instance, individuals can socialize their children differently.
