I admit that nursing has been a challenging profession can this can be vindicated by sharing how I met Essential I amid the BSN program. This was specifically when I was attached to hospital X to practice what I had learned in college. There was a time when I was dealing with a patient who had subscribed to the Christian faith, and Christians are always hopeful regardless of the situation they are experiencing. The patient was suffering from a terminal illness specifically cancer, and he was at the end of life (EOL) stage where he was experiencing intense pain following the symptoms associated with the illness. I embraced Essential I when dealing with the patient the moment I inquired from my nurse about the ultimate course of action who later encouraged me to engage the cultural values and spiritual beliefs in the treatment plan. Leadership, quality improvement, and safety involve understanding complicated systems and how power, policies, politics, and guidelines affect them. Nurses must be able to engage their practice in a microsystem setting in an ever-changing environment (Kaakinen, Steele, & Robinson, 2018). The practice demands innovation, proper leadership, and communication techniques to work efficiently among other professionals in various health care environments. The following activity met Essential II. We were allowed to take part in patient and quality care programs, knowing that these are complicated system problems that involve people, groups, families, and other members in the health care profession. We worked in pairs to finish the task each clinical day. The pairs were first familiarized with the NPSGs Hospital Program, after which they were introduced to the idea of gap analysis. The worksheet was completed by identifying the NPSGs that were relevant to the clinical surrounding, summarized the procedure, and the importance of hospital accreditation. This was followed by creating reports and a complete physical assessment of the patients provided. On the second clinical day, the pairs analyzed charts and patient surroundings for each patient assigned to students. Questionnaires based on the NPSGs were completed, and on the third clinical day, the pairs presented and discussed the formulated gap analysis and other results with other students. The Nurse-patient interactions were significant since they helped us understand the different approaches that may arise during these interactions. It is essential for nurses to communicate with the patients, caregivers, and family members in a way that does not overwhelm the patient with irrelevant information or complicated language. Nursing requires effective communication that relays and interprets information between the practitioners, patients, and family members. Establishing efficient communication in the program is crucial to giving the best care possible. Professional nursing practice is grounded in the interpretation of current evidence into practice by recognizing practice problems, evaluation and assimilation of evidence, and analysis of results. This allows nurses to understand how evidence is created, the research procedure, clinical analysis, patient decisions, and different professionals’ perspectives. The comprehension serves as a basis for more complicated uses during real practice. Nurses need to know how to combine actual evidence from various knowledge methods to practice and develop clinical decisions. By collaborating with other health practitioners, nurses document and translate evidence, thus achieving the intended results. It teaches nurses to understand the correlation between theory, practice, and research. It is always essential for nurses to adhere to evidence-based practice when providing oxygen to those with COPD. I met Essential III when we were required to provide oxygen to a patient even though there is the assumption that it can result in hypercarbia or even death. We first had to be sure that that the patient was suffering from COPD. We implemented the stated protocol for treating patients with COPD and this was provision of oxygen to prevent that patient from developing organ failure or hypoxia. We had to do regular checks to the patient to assess his progress. Constant checks and communication between us and the patient ensured we did not miss the vital signs. Providing oxygen to the patient can improve their outcome thus help them live longer. IV: Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology Technology has become an essential element in most areas, such as the medical field today. Patients’ information needs to be managed to ensure better patient care. Health information technology helps hospitals and nurses store important information based on their patients’ health. With technology, information can be stored safely and easily retrieved when needed. Information management and technology reduce the risk of medication errors. Technology has helped improve and ease information transfer between clinics, thus improved medical safety and patient care. It is therefore important for nurses to have the knowledge and skills in information and patient care technology. Information management and technology cover major areas in the field of medicine. Such areas include finance, electronic health records and safety record keeping. Technology helps nurses come up with new medication and treatments through research. Technology has advanced, and hospitals have shifted from paper-based document management systems to storing data electronically. Patients can also access their medical history and records easily through an electronic health system. While in my BSN program, I made sur that I learn and practice new information and technology techniques each day. This case has helped mean gain the skills and knowledge for effective patient care through technology. I also practiced using computers to store patients’ information for safety. Working together with other nurses creates a conducive working environment thus better patient care. Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments Health care policies influence the nature and functioning of the healthcare system through nursing practices. Nurses need to know basic healthcare policies, finance, and regulatory environment (Thomas, Servello, & Williams, 2017). Healthcare policies heavily influence the healthcare system because it ensures that the patient receives the safest and most optimal care. Nurses also need to have the knowledge on health policies since they can help make positive changes in the medicine field for better patient care. The impact of financing is to determine access to health care services. Nurses need make influence on the formulation and implementation of health policies. This case is because policies in the nursing sector are rapidly changing and patients depend on nurses for good and maximum care. Essential V refers to health care policy, finance, and regulatory environment. When it comes to this essential, I tried my best to participate in formulating new policies to ensure good patient care. My nurse helped me understand the healthcare polices better. I also did things like making sure to clean patients’ rooms after discharge. I also engaged the patients in conversations to try and get their views on the policies. Hygiene is very important when it comes to peoples’ health. Therefore, I made sure to clean my hands before and after attending to patients. I also participated as a student nurse and future nursing professional by observing political process to advocate for healthcare system changes. To advocate for equality and fairness requires nurses to acquire knowledge in specific specializations in health care. I participated in community service and seminars where we educated people on the importance of health care policies. Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes In current health care environments, it is uncommon for patients to be looked after by a single health provider. Rather, a multidisciplinary team of health practitioners performs patient care, and nurses are required to have the relevant skills and preparations to operate as a team (van Dongen et al., 2016). An example of how I met Essential VI in the BSN program is when my nurse and I were treating a patient with severe asthma. My nurse and I developed a warm, reassuring environment and engaged that patient in all the stages of treatment. I also met this essential during my clinical rotation when I was working with other nurses aside from the nurses that I was following. I worked a lot with the CNAs or health care partners, and I tried my best to help around as much as possible to ensure that the patients get whatever they need or want on time. Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health Health promotion and disease prevention at various population levels and sizes are essential in nursing practice since they help analyze and educate patients on health risks and mitigation strategies. They enable nurses to analyze a client’s willingness to learn, learning inclinations, and obstacles to learning (Lor, 2018). Nurses can plan and take part in community health while educating clients on methods that promote and sustain health and mitigate disease. Patients are informed about the relevant immunization schedules. Nurses are able to incorporate complementary treatments with health promotion initiatives for the well-being of the patient. They can give information on health promotion and sustenance recommendations. Nurses can follow up on patients’ progress after providing treatment and help them achieve high standards in terms of health outcomes. I met Essential VII during the BSN program by educating patients about the three levels of preventions. When dealing with patients admitted with COVID-19 symptoms, the first step involved ensuring our personal safety by wearing protective gear since the disease is highly contagious. The second step involved isolating the patient in the quarantine section so that other patients could not get infected. The next step involved assessing whether the patient was experiencing mild or severe symptoms so that we could which treatment strategy to use. For those with mild symptoms, there was no need to hospitalize them since the treatment strategy involved self-isolation from everyone and constant lemons and garlic consumption to minimize the infection. It was essential for those experiencing severe symptoms to be hospitalized and placed under ventilators to help them breath. Constant were done to assess the patient’s progress. Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Values Nurse practicing requires one to have and follow specific standards in life. Education is one of the critical requirements for a nurse. There are several essentials that a practicing nurse is required to fulfill (Barton, 2016). These essentials equip nurses with the knowledge and experience needed for their careers. Essential eight refers to the professionalism and professional values of a nurse. Professionalism is the state of one being able to focus on their professional duties as a practicing nurse. For a nurse to demonstrate their professionalism, they have to follow the core values at work. This essential covers how nurses relate and work with other professionals. Some of the core values that a nurse should follow are respect, work ethics, compassion, caring, and accountability. Professionalism is essential when it comes to nursing. Nurses should show compassion and concern for their patients (Godfrey & Martin, 2016). I achieved this requirement during my practice hours with patients. There were many patients at the time, and my nurse let me help her take care of the patients. I would engage the patients in a conversation, which is a way of showing concern and empathy. By listening to their stories, I got closer to them, which helped them find comfort in my company. I respected the patient’s decisions on their treatment choices. Even speaking with or hearing other professionals, I continually take the message of wisdom to integrate it into my practice. While on duty with my nurse, I professionally conducted myself by listening and following orders. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that all nurses have the skills and knowledge needed for the best healthcare. Patients do not only need treatment but also to feel important and wanted in society (Thompson & Donaway, 2018). The nurses have to show compassion and concern to patients as well as providing care and treatment to them, in addition to all that nurses need to keep their practice professional. Essential nine refers to generalist nursing practice. This virtual combine all the knowledge, skills, and professional values described from essential one to eight. The experience is needed to provide better healthcare to families, individuals, and populations in different places. Since nurses occupy a critical position in society, they must be provided with the best evidence-based practice as well as compassionate, caring skills. Essential nine is the last essential in the baccalaureate essentials. Its primary purpose is to integrate all the knowledge and skills in the other requirements for better healthcare through nurse practicing. This essential recognizes the importance of knowledge and skills integration in practice. I managed to achieve the requirements of this crucial by participating in the weekly clinical rotation.
