Critically examine the role and value of the nurse in advanced levels of nursing practice in health policy development and political processes. 2. Apply a policy analysis framework in the evaluation of contemporary health policies in and related to health care systems. 3. Assess the social, economic, legal, and ethical implications of major health policies on health care systems. 4. Discuss the legislative, regulatory and political processes related to health policy development and the effect those processes have on the current health care system. 5. Demonstrate awareness of contemporary health policy issues and resources at the national, state, and local levels. 6. Articulate the role of the nurse in advanced level nursing practice nurses in health policy development and thereby the health care system 7. Utilize critical thinking skills in class discussion, written work, online assignments, and oral/visual/voice-enhanced presentations II. METHODOLOGY: A. Teaching Method Options Readings, Lecture, Multimedia, Discussion Board, and Group Activities B. Evaluation Methods Rubrics and grading criteria are provided for all assignments. Assessment/ Solution Health Care System Paper (All Objectives) 40% ***This assignment is used for outcomes assessment and cannot be altered. Use of rubric required for grading. Faculty must complete established outcome assessment process. Students will analyze a health system for issues amenable to change in policy within the context of the policymaking process. Student will identify a public policy issue arising from governments (federal, state, local): institutional; or organizational system, or a system you are familiar with that could benefit from a policy change. Specific guidelines will be provided by the course faculty. Weekly Assignments (All Objectives) 30% Students will engage in weekly assignments designed to enhance professional communication skills, promote critical thinking, and familiarize the student with resources for enlisting the action of elected officials. Students will engage in a healthcare debate that will involve formulating a persuasive argument in favor of their position. Testifying (All Objectives) 20% The purpose of this assignment is for students to experience one aspect of the legislative process in the context of advocacy. The student will select a health policy issue of interest and prepare a seven (7) Page 2 of 5 minute testimony. Specific guidelines will be provided by the course faculty. Student Participation (All Objectives) 10% Faculty evaluates the student’s performance in course activities, group discussions, communication among faculty and students, and respect for timely submission of materials. Preparation for group work encompasses completion of required readings which contribute to fruitful discussion. The discussion board activities in this course are included in the student’s participation grade.
