Discussion 6
This week you have studied mental health (psychological); urinary and reproductive systems of the male and female in advanced physical assessment. While this is a diverse set of advanced physical assessment skills where do you place your greatest level of confidence and what areas need more development. Of these areas of advanced physical assessment where to you struggle in your nursing practice most when providing patient-centered education?
Please cite sources for additional knowledge, skill development, or professional development related to reproductive health and provide additional “clinical pearls” learned this week. In other words, please include primary sources and/or reliable electronic sources to support your arguments.
Remember to respond to at least two of your peers. Please refer to the Course Syllabus for Discussion Participation Guidelines & Grading Criteria. N522PE Mental Health Assessment & Male and Female Urinary and Reproductive Systems Assignment 4
Sample Discussion 6 Approach
From this week’s readings and assessment in mental health, urinary and reproductive health I feel the most confident in my mental health assessment skills. Working in child psych has given me the opportunity to improve my interviewing and assessment skills on admissions alongside a great team with a psychiatrist whom loves teaching and a group of therapists and case managers. I’ve learned that assessment for psychiatric health requires the practitioner to observe body language as well as tone of voice and emotional cues, while also interviewing on both medical and psychiatric history. “The Mental Status Examination consists of five components: appearance and behavior; speech and language; mood; thoughts and perceptions; and cognitive function (Bickley & Szilagyi, 2017).” A difference I’ve found between mental health interviewing and medical is the type of questions asked. For example in assessing thought content, as Bickley & Szilagyi (2017) mention “follow the patient’s leads and cues rather than asking direct questions.”
For help in developing my GU assessment skills I’ve utilized the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (2013) text. They detail the correct assessment sequence as well as abnormalities to look out for throughout. Reproductive health is an area I feel generally uneducated in throughout my career and education thus far. From what I’ve read, “primary care providers are increasingly offering reproductive health services to help address patients’ unmet contraceptive needs and improve pregnancy outcomes (Manze, et. al., 2020).” There are many benefits to improving and expending on reproductive care in the primary care setting, especially creating more access to care in underserved areas.

Re: Discussion 6
Hi Jennifer,
Crissman et. al. (2016) explored the sources where women plan to seek reproductive health services. In the study, the authors hypothesized that family clinics will remain to be the source for women health care. It was found that the poor, uneducated, uninsured as well as unmarried women will most likely be at social disadvantage in the utilization of reproductive health services. In the current health system, this generation has politicized much of the family planning services and health insurance coverage issues. This study focused on sociological and demographic factors that impact the negative outcomes of the health care services for women. The affordable act for patients’ protection has required coverage of basic women health services. The study needs to explore more on the women’s intentions to use other health care sources.
The nurse practitioners and other professional nurses have crucial role in addressing reproductive health concerns during primary care visits or even during hospital visits. As nurses, we can do an extra mile in our dealing with clients and patients. We are more than capable in safely and ethically advising the clients if we encounter health concerns during assessment even if it’s outside the clinic visit reason. In my practice, I noticed that even professional-appearing patients need education on certain health concerns. Sometimes basic knowledge that most people categorize as “common” is not common needing supportive explanation to be fully understood. It’s a daily recurrence in my practice. I’m not surprised anymore. I just offer health education when I see an opportunity for it, or sometimes I just make the opportunity.
