Adolescent pregnancy is viewed as a high-risk situation because it poses serious health risks for the mother and the baby. Describe various risk factors or precursors to adolescent pregnancy. Research community and state resources devoted in adolescent pregnancy and describe at least two of these resources. Research the teen pregnancy rates for the last 10 years for your state and community. Has this rate increased or decreased? Discuss possible reasons for an increase or decrease.

Adolescence phase of development can be a roller coaster of emotion for the individuals and their parents, as teenagers are transitioning into young adulthood. (Falkner, 2018). Emotional and cognitive changes in adolescence affects the capacity for decision making and a lack of emotional maturity, causing poor decision making and risky behaviors (Falkner, 2018). An assumption is that risk taking behaviors are linked by the desire for social and peer acceptance. There are many external stressors that can affect adolescence. Environmental stressors related to well-being and safety, such as family violence. This can cause risky behaviors like sexual exploration, drug, and alcohol use, eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, and bullying peers (CDC, 2020). There is a correlation between emotional abuse in early childhood by family and the cycle of domestic violence to repeat throughout one’s life (Falkner, 2018). Another major stressor for adolescence is social media with social connections, such as friendships, and peer influences. Adolescence struggle with self-esteem as their bodies change, social media pressures portray idealistic images of perfection. This is a struggle as they try to determine their personal identity. As advancement of technology continues, social media platforms have introduced a new type of bullying. This type of harassment is referred to as cyberbullying. this can cause risky behaviors including depression, withdrawing from family and friends, and teen suicide. That being said, the most effective and ideal support you can give adolescence involves education and skill building, which includes programs and education offering coping mechanisms for typical teenage stressors (Falkner, 2018). Strong loving family support system and faith-based groups supporting adolescents throughout their teenage years is a major role in prevention of risky behaviors and can aid with coping mechanisms. As much as adolescence do not like it, parental monitoring of cell phone usage and social media platforms, are necessary in the battle to reduce such stressors. The more parents are involved in their children’s lives the more likely the teens are to confide in them.
