Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal Planning and Topic Directions: Develop an educational series proposal for your community using one of the following four topics: 1. Bioterrorism/Disaster 2. Environmental Issues 3. Primary Prevention/Health Promotion 4. Secondary Prevention/Screenings for a Vulnerable Population Planning Before Teaching: Name and Credentials of Teacher: Jaime Morgan Beard, RN, Clinical Nurse III Estimated Time Teaching Will Last: Location of Teaching: 30-50 minutes Local Fire Department Supplies, Material, Equipment Needed: Estimated Cost: Writing material, Pamphlets $50.00 Community and Target Aggregate: Concert Theatre Managing Staffs Topic: Bioterrorism/Disaster Identification of Focus for Community Teaching Performing First Aid to victims of Mass Violence Epidemiological Rationale for Topic Incidences of mass violence have become a common occurrence around the country. Most of the perpetrators of these incidents tend to target areas with large populations and minimal security to be able to inflict maximum damage, especially death. Over the past ten years, the United States has experienced numerous incidents of mass violence which have led to deaths of many people among them young children. In 2016 alone, over 38000 lives were lost though mass shooting © 2019. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved. related incidents which makes it necessary to equip individuals running amphitheaters and other facilities holding a large number of people at a time and which have limited security to respond to such events. Such events have occurred in various such facilities in the past recording a number of fatalities. • One of the most significant and well-documented incidents is the 2012 Aurora mass shooting which occurred in Colorado inside a Century 16 movie theater. In the incident alone, 12 people were killed with 78 others sustaining serious injuries. • In 2015, another mass shooting occurred at the Grand 16 movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. The event resulted in the death of 3 people, while nine others sustained serious injuries. • Combined with incidents in other facilities and places with huge populations attending events, there is a need to prepare staff manning such facilities of the need to respond in order to save lives and minimize overall injuries. Teaching Plan Criteria Nursing Diagnosis: Knowledge deficit Readiness for Learning • Motivation – the selected trainees must demonstrate a motivation to learn more about the topic and discuss it among themselves. Emotionally, motivation can be demonstrated by the need to know more, learn more on their own, and engage the educator before and during learning. • NRS428VN Community Education Plan Poster Presentation
Prior Knowledge – asking learners before the actual training begins can help to determine the degree of prior knowledge on the topic. Having prior knowledge on the topic helps to demonstrate interest and readiness for learning. • Interest on the Topic – interest on the topic under discussion can be demonstrated by the student’s readiness and involvement in training. Coming to the training venue with the relevant materials such as writing pads and pens act as an indicator for readiness. Learning Theory to Be Utilized: For this exercise, the teach-back strategy will be used to teach selected concert theater staff on how to respond to incidents of a mass shooting and how to initiate first aid on injured individuals before paramedics arrive. The teach-back strategy is an effective way of educating individuals irrespective of their literacy level and ensures that key concepts of what is being taught are understood by all. The teach-back method enables the trainer to check on the understanding of the individuals being taught by asking them to state in their own words what they have learned and to assess recall. The teach-back strategy helps the trainer to confirm things that have been explained in a manner that they understand and helps to gauge understanding. The related showme method allows staff to confirm that patients are able to follow specific instructions taught in a single sitting or in subsequent sittings. 2 Goal One of the key goals of the Healthy People 2020 initiative is to strengthen and sustain communities’ abilities to prevent, protect, mitigate the effects of, respond to, and recover from incidents with negative health effects. Incidents of mass shootings leave behind huge negative effects as those affected tend to suffer from serious physical injuries and death in most cases. Those affected also tend to suffer serious psychological issues which tend to have negative effects for the rest of their lives. In regard to the current training of emergency response and administration of first aid, the objective based on the HP2020 as per the preparedness objectives is PREP-12 (Developmental) – Increase the proportion of adults who have taken actions to prepare for a possible disaster or emergency within 6 months after being made aware of preparedness information. The objective of this goal is to increase the number of people who possess the relevant skills and ability to respond to emergencies, including those associated with mass violence. How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives? The goal of this HP202 was to increase the proportion of adults who have taken actions to prepare for possible disaster or emergency. This is in line with the Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives objective which state that “the people have the right and duty to participate individually and collectively in the planning and implementation of their health care.” By training people on how to undertake emergency responses and conduct first aids, the objective addresses the objectives advocated for by the WHO. Develop Behavioral Objectives (Including Domains), Content, and Strategies/Methods: Behavioral Objective and Domain Content Strategies/Methods 1. Theater staff will identify one of the possible mass violence events that may occur in their facility. 2. The trainees will identify some of the tools that may be used to respond to the crisis. 3. They will describe the process of conducting firstaid step by step. 4. They will differentiate different steps of conducting first aid. Creativity Creativity is an important component of the learning process as it promotes learning and understanding among students. One of the ways of applying creativity in learning is by creating an environment which promotes learning and understanding. Other than this, letting the student get actively involved in learning by presenting them with ideas and letting them analyze and discuss the concept behind the idea on their own will promote learning. Promoting creative thinking and helping students better understand hard concepts and issues will also improve learning and promote understanding. Giving feedback and using appropriate strategies which promote learning should also be promoted. ▪ Use creative instructional strategies, models, and methods as much as possible in a variety of domains. One of the creative instructional strategies that will be used is differentiated instruction in combination with collaborated learning. One of the solutions is adopting a differentiated approach to instruction. By adopting a differentiated approach in instructing students, one is able to ensure that the different needs of the students are met. Other than this, adopting a retrofit approach to differentiate instructions ensures that the teachers are able to identify the different needs of the students and work with them by differentiating content in a manner that the needs of every student are met. Collaborating with students enable the teacher to identify mismatches which might exist. By closely working with students to evaluate and discuss their weaknesses and needs, the teacher is able to ensure that the needs of the respective students are met. Using gifted students as tutors in a collaborative process can also have a positive impact on the student who might be struggling with learning. Planned Evaluation of Objectives 1. Identifying possible mass violent events – to assess understanding of how to identify various events of mass violence. 2. Identifying weapons used in committing crimes – this helps to plan for response and defense in the event of an attack. 3. Potential injuries victims are likely to suffer – this helps determine the types of injuries and how to administer first aid. 4. How to conduct basic first aid and request for emergency services – first aid skills will be critical in the event of a mass attack. NRS428VN Community Education Plan Poster Presentation
Having the capability to perform various first aid activities will be evaluated extensively. 4 Planned Evaluation of Goal During the training exercise, trainees will be questioned on their understanding of the material and topic being taught. By asking questions during the teach-back process, I will be able to evaluate the understanding of the trainees. Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher The teach-back process, which will be adopted during learning, will be used to evaluate the understanding of the trainees continuously and will determine the level of their understanding. The process presents a good opportunity for ensuring that the teacher is able to repeat topics and issues which the teacher might not have understood during the teaching process. Barriers • Motivation – lack of motivation is likely to impact learning and understanding negatively. It’s essential to come up with innovative strategies of helping the trainees remain motivated during the entire exercise. • Turnout – the training exercise might record a low turnout of potential trainees, making it hard to train only a few of those who show up. The intensive campaign will be conducted before the exercise to build awareness. • Lack of coordination – trainees who show up to the event might fail to coordinate with the trainers making it hard to undertake the training exercise. Therapeutic Communication 4.2 Communicate therapeutically with patients. In therapeutic communication, printed pamphlets will be used to communicate therapeutically to the trainees. These pamphlets will be prepared before the classes begin and will be distributed at the end of the class. 5 The benchmark assesses the following competencies: 3.3 Provide individualized education to diverse patient populations in a variety of health care settings.
