This will ensure that patient care quality is optimal in the healthcare institution. In general, nursing administration term includes nursing professionals with ample knowledge when it comes to leadership practices related to the nursing field. Therefore, nursing leadership, also known as nursing administration, describes specific executive titles like CNO (Chief Nursing Officer), Nursing Supervisor, Nurse Manager, Vice President of Nursing, and Nurse Administrator. Leadership and Management Ideally, the integration of management and leadership is vital in the role of nursing administration. Leadership and management ensure that the delivery of quality healthcare is present. Generally, these two terms are similar. However, they differ in aspects such as skills and types of outlook. One reason for integrating leadership in nursing administration is to promote motivation in the work environment. Leaders are tasked with the responsibility of motivating other employees in the workplace (World Health Organization, 2018). Nursing administration is tasked with motivating nurses in a healthcare setting. Due to the hectic nature of the nursing profession, nursing leadership professionals need to inspire other nurses as they carry out their job. This will help in improving healthcare delivery. Additionally, in any organization, management helps in achieving group goals. It organizes and assembles resources and integrates these resources effectively. Moreover, management helps in directing group efforts towards attaining several aspirations (World Health 3 Organization, 2018). Therefore, by integrating management into the role of nursing administration, nursing leadership professionals should be able to mobilize funds and other resources, which are vital in ensuring that healthcare delivery does not come to a standstill. More so, the primary objective of nurses is to safeguard a patient’s health. Therefore, these resources should be directed towards improving healthcare delivery. Also, management helps in reducing running costs in an organization (World Health Organization, 2018). Through proper planning, management uses human and physical resources to aid in cost reduction. Hence, by integrating management into the role of nursing administration, nursing leadership professionals should be able to oversee the implementation of policy changes, which will lead to reduced running costs in the healthcare organization. Democratic leadership, also called shared leadership or participative leadership, is a leadership style where subordinate staff members are actively involved in the decision-making process (Sharma, 2014). Therefore, as a democratic leader, I offer workers the opportunity to participate in decision-making, and hence, the judgments are based on the majority vote. This philosophy of management and leadership is essential when making complex decisions. Typically, all nurses are can participate, discuss, and exchange ideas under this leadership philosophy. What is more, even if the nurses are awarded these opportunities, the nursing leadership professionals are tasked with the responsibility of guiding and controlling (Sharma, 2014). Moreover, in the democratic philosophy of management and leadership, the leader decides which employees should contribute to the decision-making process. 5 According to recent and past studies, scholars have discovered that democratic leadership is instrumental since it leads to increased group morale, satisfaction, involvement, higher productivity, and increased contributions from subordinate members (Sharma, 2014). Typically, this style of leadership realizes the needs of the employees. In return, they get what they want. Because of this, an organization becomes successful and sustainable. Additionally, member satisfaction is higher under this type of philosophy of management and leadership (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014). Moreover, subordinate staff members have trust and confidence in their managers and seniors. When issues arise, varied participants partake in the discussion, and the majority decision is the final decision. Nonetheless, one disadvantage of this style of leadership is the fact that it is time-consuming (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014). This is because the decision has to be made by numerous people. Nonetheless, this philosophy of management and leadership suffers from a slowed decision-making process. Furthermore, it is very ineffective in specific scenarios. Values used to guide my nursing practice include honesty, fairness, creativity, courage, competence, and intelligence. Leadership Style and Preferences The democratic leadership style tends to align with my vision and mission. My vision statement is, “To discover, develop and deliver quality healthcare.” Democratic leadership is all about involving the employee more in the organization’s activities. The first element of my mission is to discover new ways of delivering healthcare. The democratic leadership style allows staff members to be creative. Thus, through this creativity, they can come up with new ways of improving patient care in the healthcare facility. Also, my mission entails developing new healthcare delivery methods. In the democratic leadership style, group members are given a 6 chance to share opinions, even though the leader has the last word. This sharing of ideas can lead to the development of new means of healthcare delivery. For instance, through the sharing of ideas, nurses can come up with better ways of administering medication and monitoring patients. Additionally, my mission statement is, “we put the person who needs our care at the center of everything we do.” Through democratic leadership, staff members are instilled with values like honesty and fairness. Because of this, they always strive to do their job well. What is more, their primary goal in the healthcare institution is to look after the patients. As a result, nurses always put the patients at the center of everything they do. Life-Long Learning Lifelong learning is an integral component of the philosophies of leadership. One realizes the best way to treat employees to get the most out of them. More so, this lifelong learning allows one to try out several leadership philosophies and decide which bears the best results. For instance, when I was new in the nursing leadership professional, I favored the autocratic leadership style. In this leadership philosophy, the leaders make decisions unilaterally (Bhatti et al., 2014). However, there was no employee satisfaction, and I made numerous wrong decisions. Nonetheless, I eventually found success under democratic leadership. Thus, this demonstrates how life-long learning is an integral component of the philosophies of leadership. Conclusion To conclude, the nursing administration should make use of the democratic leadership style to attain success. Professional Practice and Academic Influence I have held the same professional position since beginning the graduate Nursing Administration program in 2016 but have grown exponentially as a leader. I am a nurse supervisor at Baylor University Medical Center in the Cardiothoracic and Transplant Intensive Care Unit. My role as a supervisor includes management tasks such as scheduling and payroll, but also allows me to practice my leadership skills with counseling and mentoring opportunities. One very tangible change in my management role as a result of my course work is my involvement with unit finances as it relates to labor costs. Because of what I learned in the course, Financial Management in Nursing, I have taken an active role in managing my unit’s work hours per patient day.
