Privacy

The ability of individuals or groups of people to isolate themselves or information about themselves and thus express themselves selectively is termed as privacy. During medieval times, privacy was barely an issue but that has changed in the recent past due to advancements in technology.

Issues related to privacy are very significant both to an individual and society as a whole.  Privacy is all about respecting individuals and their wishes. Privacy also plays a significant role in maintaining appropriate social boundaries (Brenneman and Yacob 1). Individuals in society establish boundaries from others which are very important in making people feel relaxed and at ease. These boundaries are maintained by privacy without which awkward social situations can be created hence damaging relationships in the society.

Although many people are willing to share personal information and especially in social media, they are often cautious about disclosing certain information. For instance, people share personal information that cannot expose them to danger (Brenneman and Yacob 1). Besides, people do not share information that can incriminate them and others share personal information in return for certain benefits. For example, sharing health information with a personal doctor. As a result, an individual can access health records and make scheduling appointments easier.

The issue of privacy, however, raises certain questions. For instance, what actions are being taken that create trends that can be exploited by rivals? Can sources of big data be trusted and what information should be shared in social media and which one should not be shared?.

In conclusion, issues related to privacy are significant in society. Privacy creates social boundaries that maintain healthy relationships in society. The privacy should be used positively without infringing on the rights of others.
