Who:

The author is Howard Zinn, and the chapter is from his book A People’s History of the United States: Tyranny is Tyranny; he was a historian, author, professor, playwright, and activist.

What:

Primary source -About how the American Revolution was a technique for American leaders to acquire support and influence instead of fighting for liberty which could be enjoyed by all people in spite of their social affiliations. Influential individuals realized they could create a state which could enable them to acquire independence from Britain through the backing of individuals from the lower class.

When:

The book was written in 1980 but the content of the chapter is about late 1700s.

Where:

This took place in the United States of America where American elites noticed the people’s urge to acquire self-rule from the British and decided to redirect that urge to the colonizers. Such leaders and especially in areas such as Boston mobilized the people against the British whereby both genuine and selfish interests took center stage spreading to other cities in the country.

Why important:

To get independence from the British, American elites needed support from the poor majority. To gain their support however, leaders had to give handouts and pass certain reforms in favor of the rural working-class but took necessary precautions to keep themselves safe in case mob violence against them arose.

For the achievement of independence from the British, American leaders needed the support of the majority rural working class.
Support of the rural working class could only be obtained by giving them handouts and passing reforms in their favor.
Also, the impressive language was used as a weapon to gain the support of the working class. Leaders could represent the people’s grievances in a language they easily understood. As a result, they massively got the support of the people.
Declaration of independence received massive support from the Americans and brought them together against a common enemy. However, the acquired freedom did not take care of the rights of the minority populations such as the people of color.
Those who benefited most as a result of the declaration were the already wealthy individuals which led to the maintenance of class conflicts.

The American elites won the revolutionary war in most parts of the country because of their ability to use impressive language to lure the people to fight the British colonialists.

When:

The book was written in 1980 but the content of the chapter is about the late 1700.

Where:

This took place in the United States of America where the American elites finally won the fight for independence through the support of the rural working majority. However, majority of the white individuals who joined the war did it out of selfish interests instead of patriotism. For instance, they believed that joining the army would bring them wealth.

Why:

After years of British rule which denied American citizens certain inalienable rights, American elites demanded for self-rule.

Reading notes

Throughout the war, there were continuous wrangles between the rich elites and the poor people in the country.
The poor people were against the rich elites who claimed to support the war but barely took part in fighting.
After the war, American elites had the obligation to decide on what to do with the large tracts of land left behind by colonial sympathizers. They could either own it or give it to those who took part in the war.
The war did not benefit the poor majority but favored the upper class individuals.
American citizens claimed the land belonging to the Indians who were allied to the British.
